I shall pass on your thanks to this student!
mixosaurus.bsky.social
I should mention that I've been out as queer longer than this student has been alive! So after assuring her that I know what a chapstick lesbian is, we had a great conversation about labels and why they're interesting
mixosaurus.bsky.social
The term "butch" is not popular with her peers - the dichotomy is masc/femme rather than butch/femme. Interesting to consider this (lack of) usage alongside efforts to recentre and reexamine "butch"

Today one of my students took it upon herself to explain the lesbian taxonomy to me, including such terms as "femme", futch" and "chapstick lesbian". According to her, the kids are using "masc" instead of "butch", and "stone top" instead of "stone butch"

I'm on the side of the shark btw

“The films you like to watch are emotionally complex with characters who all look kind of the same* and have incredibly complicated and nuanced motivations, and it’s exhausting. What I want to watch is a film where a big shark wants to bite things.”

So we’re watching Jaws today.

To be specific, at the point when spouse and I got together I am pretty sure they had seen a maximum of twelve films in their life that weren’t a Jurassic Park, a Star War or a Die Hard.
mixosaurus.bsky.social
Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
The Crown
Mad Men
Peaky Blinders
Love Island (but I've read a lot of transcripts thanks to sociolx of gender students)
James Bond (any)
The Godfather
Lord of the Rings
Any Tarantino
Any Cary Grant film

My wife says it would be faster to list the films I have seen

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.
mixosaurus.bsky.social
Also never seen Indiana Jones (any), Seinfeld, Frasier, Arrested Development, Community, The Wire, House, Golden Girls, The Office, Sex and the City, Supernatural...

Thanks! It ended up being 17500 words when we submitted it!

My brilliant friend Ruth wrote this incredible essay about grief and the ways that trans people are failed by institutions and the ways in which we must - must! - resist doom to create something better. We find solace and solidarity and help and hope in community 🏳️‍⚧️

New essay: REJECT TRANS DOOM-POSTING.

It's about grief, loss, institutional failures, and the horror of the current moment.

It's also a love letter to trans community, and the things we do with and for one another.

This week I took the long train down to the south of England for my friend Robyn’s funeral. She died very suddenly three weeks ago, aged just 32. Robyn gave so much love to the world, and was so lo…

Delighted to announce (ugh, can't believe I'm saying that) that Alon Lischinsky and my bibliography of Trans Media Studies is out with Oxford Bibliographies! It's basically the equivalent of a compilation tape - key works, deep cuts and things we like

I feel weird about sharing photos of people with whom I'm no longer in touch, but please enjoy this photo of me from Dec 2006 in a houseshare somewhere off Liverpool's Smithdown Road. The sofa! The belt! The Ikea storage crate that we tried to disguise! I can smell this photo...
A person with brown skin, short black hair and glasses, wearing blue baggy jeans, a studded belt, a grey hoodie and, inexplicably, reflective armbands strikes a dramatic pose for the camera. They are in a cluttered living room. You can see two sofas in matching kinda ugly patterned fabric, a coffee table covered in random mess and an open bottle of wine, and a storage crate in the background over which someone has placed some lacy fabric to try to disguise that it's a storage crate. It's not really working to disguise anything.

I've baked when it's 32°C and when it's around 10°C and it was a very different experience! I'm told that sea level also makes a difference but that's not really something I've had the opportunity to explore
mixosaurus.bsky.social
I think, given that you're already working with quite a high level of hydration in the dough, ambient humidity is probably less of a factor. Not saying that it has *no* effect because it will - but I think temperature is probably the one that varies more when I bake and has a greater effect
mixosaurus.bsky.social
The tally marks are to keep track of how many times I do stretch and folds during bulk fermentation. Tbh I notice more of a difference with temperature - I baked this on a cool day and it was somewhat underproofed. Might start recording temp because that does seem to be such a major factor
mixosaurus.bsky.social
I don't but I probably should...

Back on my sourdough bullshit. Didn't get as much rise as I hoped but not bad from a resurrected dried starter and my first time baking with it in a couple of years. Probably going to be the first of many...
A round, golden brown sourdough loaf. It's fresh out of the oven and resting on a kitchen hob to cool down. Handwritten list of the ingredients and weights, notes on timings and notes on oven temperatures and timings

Ultimately, the EHRC guidance indicates that we should be denied community, healthcare, employment and fundamentally, denied being part of society. How do you talk to people who think that's entirely fair and proportionate?
mixosaurus.bsky.social
Preparing to write to my MP about the EHRC guidance and just. What do I have to do and say to convince people that I, and all trans people, deserve to live with dignity and peace and safety? How do I persuade someone that we deserve to live?

It's physically unsafe for people like me to go into the centre of our home city this Saturday on account of the colour of our skin.

Most politicians are either failing to stand up to this or actively contributing to the situation.

We don't owe any of those politicians our votes. Not one of them.

I have just submitted a new article on the language(ability) of the collective trauma of witnessing Gaza and the role of language in pedagogy and anticolonial struggles.

Here is the closing paragraph:
