Rabies in an unmanaged cat colony.

No human cases but a large investigation.

Cat colonies aren't going away so we should manage them better. The amount of $ spent for this investigation could have covered a lot of spay/neuter/vaccination.

I would take this very seriously if contacted. Rabies can have a very long incubation time before symptoms develop. Post exposure prophylaxis administered in a timely manner is very effective.

Just in case there was any doubt, ChatGPT 5.0 still makes up completely random citations that don't exist and should not be used for literature search.
1. David Ackerly (UC Berkeley)

While his most-cited work is on leaf size and SLA, he also wrote explicitly about plasticity in leaf traits, including shape, in the context of ecological strategies.

Example: Ackerly (1997), “Allocation, leaf display, and growth in fluctuating light environments: A comparative study of deciduous and evergreen species” (Oecologia). This emphasizes how plasticity in leaf traits mediates adaptation to light.

Study highlights antifungal use in US hospitals

Data from 412 US hospitals from 2018 through 2023 show 4.5% of patients received an antifungal, a finding researchers say warrants a specific focus on antifungal stewardship.

🦟 West Nile virus in Europe

As summer progresses, IT, EL, RO, BG & FR have reported 163 locally acquired human cases of #WestNileVirus infection so far this year.

📊 This is above the 10-year average for this point in the season, but far below the same period in record years of 2024 & 2018.

Earlier this year… “In this case report, we present a young adult with a history of chronic e-cigarette use diagnosed with pulmonary blastomycosis. The patient’s young age, lack of underlying health conditions… along with ambiguous imaging findings, posed a significant diagnostic challenge.”

Measles virus diverged phylogenetically from rinderpest bovine virus. I did not know that.
infectiousdz.bsky.social
Measles likely came from cows (via rinderpest) around the 6th century BCE.

For 2,500 years, we didn’t evolve superhuman resistance—children just died. Real protection only came in the 1960s, with vaccines.

Our superpower isn’t evolving into superhumans. It’s outthinking pathogens.
