I am doing a panel intro today. I really don't want to recite their bio - everyone already has the bio (from the program & website). I now do 1-2 lines from the bio & then note a recent, relevant publication. If the audience is really interested in the panelist, go read / cite their work!

We did a cute promo for library card month with Tempe Public Library and Arizona Roller Derby. Their head librarian is a former skater and our league boasts quite a few librarians (academic, public, & symphony based). Derby + library are a natural pairing!

Excellent thread on doing the right thing / being an ethical and moral actor in complex times.

I was once a person who wanted to do good but harmed instead. I was once a person who wanted to do good but did not because I feared the personal consequences.

I think a lot of people struggle with pragmatism on one hand and leading an ethical life with integrity on the other.

I'm sorry but the more I think about it the more bothered I am about this whole concept of choosing whether or not you can be a good person is it different for other people do you just get to choose whether you're flexible uncertain things how can you live that way?

This morning, the Trump Administration’s Department of War gave me an ultimatum: call up your troops, or we will. It is absolutely outrageous and un-American to demand a Governor send military troops within our own borders and against our will.

Each week I remind students that printing the readings & highlighting + taking notes on the page will help them learn, remember, and better engage in discussion. A few have taken this approach - hard to discern if their performance is better for it or high performers took my advice

For years republicans have shut down government or held it hostage for months at a time w/continuing resolutions. Today GOP controls all three branches & Dems are lined up to take the blame for a "potential" shut down caused by GOP incompetence & self destruction. Dem leadership is so bad at this!

Because everyone knows the first place an immigrant goes in Chicago is the architectural boat tour!

ICE boats trawling the Chicago River. This is the DUMBEST thing I've seen in my entire life. No exaggeration. What's next? Humvees loaded with armed, masked agents patrolling Disney's Main Street U.S.A.?

@pengzell.bsky.social asks about the social sciences, which I haven't looked at in a while. Indexing these against 2008 rather than peak, and struck that economics has been on a downslope for 6 years now, while psychology, the worst discipline, continues to rise rapidly.

Chart titled 'Quality of Social Science Disciplines inversely correlated with change since 2008', showing that Criminology and Psychology have increased , economics is steady, and Polisci, anthro, IR, and Sociology are all down 30-40%

Trump is ordering the military to use “full force” against an American city, while the Supreme Court declares him the Sun King and Congress hides under a pile of coats.

The checks and balances only work when the institutions aren’t run by utter cowards and the complicit

If Comey is the Radical Left, where does that leave the rest of us?

Q: Now that Comey has been indicted, who is the next person on your list?

TRUMP: It's not a list, but I think they'll be others. I mean, they're corrupt. These were corrupt radical left Democrats.

WOW. The lead plaintiff is a Latino man who's been here legally for 24 years. He was grabbed off the street by plainclothes federal agents who didn't even ASK about his status.

He was detained overnight and only released once a supervisor realized he had been illegally arrested.
PARTIES3. Plaintiff José Escobar Molina is a 47-year-old man who has lived in D.C. for 25 years. He has maintained valid Temporary Protected Status (“TPS”) for El Salvador since 2001. On August 21, 2025, Mr. Escobar Molina was walking from his apartment building in Northwest D.C.to his work truck, about to start his workday, when two cars pulled up next to him. As he was about to get into his truck, plain-clothed and unidentified federal agents exited the cars and—without conducting any inquiry—seized Mr. Escobar Molina, grabbing him by the arms and legs and immediately handcuffing him. The agents arrested him without a warrant and without asking for his name, his identification, or anything about his immigration status. The agents also did not ask him where he lives, whom he lives with, how long he has lived here, or anything else about his ties to the community prior to arresting him. After ICE detained Mr. Escobar Molina overnight at its processing center in Chantilly, Virginia, the next day an ICE supervisor finally realized that he had valid TPS, which statutorily prohibits ICE from detaining him, and released him. Due tohis Latino ethnicity, Mr. Escobar Molina fears being arrested and detained again while going about his daily life in D.C.
