I write about what I obsess about: fiction, poker, culture, comparative religion, leadership, Negro League baseball, soccer. Some of what I write even makes it online.
Yume Kitasei's _The Deep Sky_ is a YA-focused, welcome addition to the "generation ship" genre. Unsure what that is? Check out the short review ...

Hannah Kaner's _Fallen Gods_ trilogy was one of my favorite series of the past few years. Fast paced, great characters, creative and broad representation. Recommended.

Another #ReadingWell!

This time, it's Peter Heller's _Celine_, which is both classic Heller and very different.

I love me some Heller--his connection with nature, his fundamental commitment to examining questions of personal responsibility. Recommended.

It's another entry in #Listen/Here, my foray into writing about some of what I'm listening to.

Today it's trumpeter Peter Evans' trio album, _Extra_. Evans is magnificent, and worth listening to across his various projects.

A return to #ReadingWell by Teju Cole, this time for his 2023 novel, _Tremor_. If you are a fan of "novels of the mind," Cole is among the best out there right now.

This #ReadingWell is about Jeff Vandermeer's _Absolution_. It's a pretty easy review: if you liked the original Southern Reach trilogy, you'll like this (and, honestly, have probably already read it).

This one is my favorite sci-fi noir in years? Decades? If you like the genre, and want a taut, extraordinarily well realized, hard-boiled read, go get this. Now. Better news: another novel in the same world drops this Fall.

New #ReadingWell: _The Angel of Crows_ by Katherine Addison. mankinlevine.com/2025/07/read... .

I'm a big fan of her mix of fantasy and traditional mystery with a spot of tea. Did not have a winged Sherlock Holmes solving Jack the Ripper on my card, but here we are. Strongly recommended.

Second installment of #Listen/Here, this one focused on Nik Bärtsch's Ronin's 2024 release, Spin. It's a bit of an IYKYK listen: if you like Bärtsch's notions of _moduls_, you'll love the jazz-adjacent, trance-adjacent grooves and explorations here. Recommended.

Another #ReadingWell. This one was a pleasant surprise--I almost gave up on _Some Desperate Glory_ by Emily Tesh, but I'm very glad I did not. Especially recommended for time travel afficionados.

A new thing for the half dozen of you following!

#Listen/Here tries to adopt the same form as #ReadingWell for music that wanders across my playlist. I'm picking albums at random, and first up we have Bugge Wesseltoft's _Am Are_.
