Now that I knew what the dress was I started thinking about what needed to go underneath to support the volume of the skirt. Which is where I currently am in the construction process. These two items from the Met's collection helped a lot (they're both slightly later in the decade)

In my digging, Pinterest delivered me a better lit image where I could take note of the construction of the bodice and more details of the seaming in general. It continued to be perfect.

I finally came across the Dior Sonnet Dress from F/W 1952. It's perfect. It's strapless (I hate adding straps) the length is adorable, somewhere between tea and ballerina length and the gored panels in the skirt gave the body I was looking for without the need for bulky pleating at the waist.

So! I decided I wanted to design something. My initial inspiration was loosely a Dior New Look kind of vibe: I loved the structural skirts, the flattering waist and the open necklines.
