I also made a whole coat to wear over the dress, as a treat

Until I get better at documenting my finished sewing projects, here is one of 3 pics of me wearing the finished Sonnet dress at my friend’s wedding. It did not fall apart and was v comfortable, 10/10 recommend makin ur own formal gear!

Sometimes, in the bleak midwinter, you have spend three weeks fashioning a prop fireplace out of trash (seriously, this is all cardboard and xps foam)

This was my first try at migrating darts quite so dramatically and I’m pretty pleased with what I learned here. With the mockup looking right, I cut out the fabric and lining and got to assembling my beautiful emerald green satin dress.
January 29, 2025 at 4:27 AM
The main issue was that the front darts on the bodice were too far forward and the seams for the gores were too far from the center. I did a bit of adjusting of my original pattern for the bodice and ended up with something that curved those seams in a much more sculptural way around the waist
January 29, 2025 at 4:25 AM
Once I assembled that bodice I also assembled the skirt, basing my design directly off the reference by sight and guesswork rather than using a pattern. This actually got me pretty dang close
January 29, 2025 at 4:22 AM
I started off with the bodice because I knew the skirt was going to be two panels and two gores and that I needed the bodice seams finalized before I got that far.

I scrounged around my patterns and found this one which had darts that looked pretty similar to what I had seen in the original

Dior Sonnet Dress update: Design

This is the final muslin mockup, getting here was actually much simpler than I thought it would be! But it did take some fiddling

2.5 after much pinning and repinning I have finished binding the hem of the petticoat please enjoy this very safe for work partial try on

2.4 the skirt was exactly as annoying as I thought it would be. I’m adding the final binding to both layers. It’s not beautiful, but it does its job and no one will ever see it but me. I am currently concerned the tulle isn’t stiff enough to support the skirt but I am past the point of caring.

2.3 learning from my mistakes on the solstice dress, I added a temporary zipper to the bodice for ease of try on during the whole process. Also I really just love all the lil marks on the exterior of the fabric. All my notes and registrations preserved for The Future™️
January 23, 2025 at 3:44 PM
2.2 I started with the construction of the bodice because I hate working with tulle. (It is deeply NSFW on the body so we will be skipping that here) I used my muslin mockup as the exterior since it will never be seen and used some scrap silk I had from making pillowcases years ago for the lining

2. Underpinnings
Now that I knew what the dress was I started thinking about what needed to go underneath to support the volume of the skirt. Which is where I currently am in the construction process. These two items from the Met's collection helped a lot (they're both slightly later in the decade)

In my digging, Pinterest delivered me a better lit image where I could take note of the construction of the bodice and more details of the seaming in general. It continued to be perfect.

I finally came across the Dior Sonnet Dress from F/W 1952. It's perfect. It's strapless (I hate adding straps) the length is adorable, somewhere between tea and ballerina length and the gored panels in the skirt gave the body I was looking for without the need for bulky pleating at the waist.

So! I decided I wanted to design something. My initial inspiration was loosely a Dior New Look kind of vibe: I loved the structural skirts, the flattering waist and the open necklines.

Okay now that I’ve ✨nearly✨ finished the underpinnings for this dress, I can give a breakdown of this project. Let’s kick it off with inspo 🫡
