at best, it feels naive. at minimum, it feels out-of-touch. at worst, it’s a grotesque display of wealth. or maybe it’s just optics to disguise the fact that almost everyone is cutting back and fearing the future. lol

i don’t think we should all have to have the privilege of traveling to understand that the world is so much bigger than we can see directly around us. and also that what’s around us is incredible in its own right. and so worth saving 😭

and there are other angles to it — voyeurism and decontextualization and the framing of the storytellers — but the world is changing so rapidly. i think there’s something genuinely incredible about capturing these moments in time, en masse, w/o the institutional oversight to massage the narrative

everywhere has its own unique beauty and everyone on this planet is living such a rich life. idk watching some of these videos, it’s wild to me how historically unprecedented it is to see so casually into people’s lives and homes and environments. without a huge documentary production budget!

watching a lot of travel videos lately has made me so eager to travel, but i also feel there’s something really special about the art/act of recording and allowing places, people, moments etc to be experienced in perpetuity from all over the world

watching one rn that’s just called “I Found Giant Trees On Google Earth” and it’s just the most incredible footage of the remaining west coast old growth forest. it’s breathtaking. you can tell some of these creators, in pursuit of Content, are having the most profound experiences of their lives
