I write code and I’m interested in communication, leadership, running and self help topics
As I transition more into a management role, I realize the following

a) software development is relaxing
b) management and leadership is mostly about knowing yourself, serving and enabling others
c) most people in a leadership shouldn’t be there because they lack the b)asic training

I love my job as a web application developer and at the same time I wonder why anyone would want to dive into this domain today.

Why do some products torture their users into paying for a subscription? Strava, Youtube, Revolut, Soundcloud, just to name a few. Rather make your products so good, that people will throw money at you.

When did accepting a LinkedIn connection become invitation for telling me about your product and services? I’m like a casino, first you pay, then you play.

If your HP Elitebook USB C port stops reponding entirely, not even reacting to power, then hold down the laptop power button for half a minute. That should do the trick.

Cars and computers are two of the worst investments one can make, unless you can deduct them from tax and/or earn money with them. Shop wisely.

HTML has been around for almost 40 years and yet most people I encounter (certainly everyone using publishing to the intranet and company wiki) do not know what hypertext is or how to use it.

Does it affect you directly? Can you influence it? No, then stop worrying about it.

99.99% of the global news is a waste of your time.

Focus on your phyisical and mental health instead and the rest will solve itself.

Here’s a three step plan to improving your support hotline:

1) Get rid of the useless AI chat bot. It’s best answer is always the same: “contact a human”.
2) Publish an email address on your app / web page front page. Make it big and bold.
3) Make it work! Either your product and/or service.

Reminder to myself: how to write good error messages

Bad:

- "Error: Missing item foo"

Good:

- "Error: Missing item foo, please add it to items.yml"

Upload that profile photo, use the camera during meetings, speak up and ask that “stupid” question. Be human.

Let your ideas and opinions be heard.

If you are an experienced web application developer and can describe a closure, pure function, prototype chain, and the difference between map and reduce, you’re almost a unicorn and in the top 0.01%.

It’s amazing how much rambling goes on on CNN and Fox News. Lots of talking with almost zero information, on repeat all day.

There are two ways of influencing your government:

1) Vote
2) Become someone others can vote for

Voicing your opinion or the opinion of others on social media, only feeds the algorithms and the bubble we all live in.

Wrapping complex props (arrays, functions and objects) in #useCallback or #useMemo is less a question about #performance and everything about controling renders of child components. With React 19, this work can be outsourced to the #React #Compiler.
