Poli Sci prof., Global Governance, Global financial relations, money laundering, illicit markets, and comparative welfare state stuff. Also music, food, and the abysmal state of North Carolina politics. #firstgen
Seems like “alleged” is a better word than “suspected,” NY Times. Or better yet, “The administration claims without evidence that the people it has killed are smuggling drugs.”

Gonna side with my local theatre on this one. Defund ICE.

I’m fairly certain that in my 17 years at NC State that I’ve seen exactly two protests. This is not a campus of radicals or activists. Both protests have been in the last month, targeting ICE and its illegal, thuggish tactics.

Venezuela this morning. Threatening Iran, while Rubio is chomping at the bit to go into Cuba. Congress had steadily abdicated its war powers even before this Congress gave up its powers over anything. 2026 is going to be a violent one.

This piece, by @rhodesben.bsky.social , is the clearest and best statement I’ve read to date on what’s needed to turn back the MAGA Ponzi scheme. The ? is whether anyone will have the courage to do it.

It’s tempting to say that this is the end of a saga, but when one party has proved itself willing to overturn free and fair elections, getting thru one election is just a warm-up for the shenanigans to follow.

Another day, another example of the chattering classes showing they’ve no notion of life at universities beyond the Ivy League and their co—conspirators. It’s such a warped view and blinds everyone to the radical impact normal public universities have in this world:

The President of the United States says our businesses should be able to bribe. What do you want to bet that they try to make bribes tax deductible?

A question for my academic peeps: do you get bizarre, automatically generated invitations to publish in completely unrelated fields? I study Anti-Money Laundering, and thus often am invited to publish based on my stellar reputation in Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

What’s next, @nytimes.com? Are you gonna go full partisan and say Trump lies?

Very happy to have cast my vote from abroad for the folks in favor of more rights, more opportunity, and more democracy and against the folks who prefer coups.

Agree re: hubris. Its use is a performance of the word. But I’ve always thought the dissatisfied (or just ick) feeling of milquetoast was kind of the point. So I had to look it up. From MW:

The conversation doesn’t need to be about Mark Robinson. The conversation needs to be about how Mark Robinson is a product the North Carolina Republican party and the MAGA Republican Party in general. That’s the story here.
