Iowa Senate just approved a bill that would require counties w/a state university (Johnson, Story, Black Hawk) to elect county supervisors by district, rather than at large.
They claim the goal is greater rural representation.
Obvious goal is electing Republicans.

Depends on what you value. If it's these cultural boundaries, the Front Range would have 5% of the land area and probably 4x the population of the Northern Plains. So I doubt the latter gets two senators if the former does not.

Certainly working well in this environment, but could be improved. And again, if demographics shift even subtly in one of about 12 ways, that safeguard is reduced or removed.

There's a lot of "wasted" Republican votes in IA4. If we didn't have the compactness requirement we do, you could certainly trade some counties on the margins to get to three +12 R districts, and if you're willing to sacrifice IA1 you could probably get three +18 Rs. So that's one safeguard holding.

Had the Lege moved one county (Linn into IA1 or Johnson into IA2) we would have had, under current politics, a fairly safe R and D district. Instead, we have a lean-R and true tossup. Probably better that way!

Iowa does have a non-partisan districting process that has flaws and could be abused, but our demographics add a layer of protection.

JUST IN: Federal prosecutors in Chicago move to dismiss "without prejudice" the charges against Huburt Mazur, who faced a misdemeanor charge stemming from ICE protests in Broadview.

Mazur's preliminary hearing was set for Wednesday morning.
