Architect Serge Chermayeff was born on this day in 1900. His most assured design during his time in Britain was Bentley Wood, his own house in Halland, East Sussex. It was called a "Rolls Royce of a house", read more about it here www.modernism-in-metroland.co.uk/blog/the-rol...

Architect Eric Lyons was born OTD in 1912. He worked as an assistant for Maxwell Fry and Walter Gropius and later set up his own partnership. He would design over 2000 homes for the Span development company, spread around the suburbs of London

Only two weeks after the death of Nicholas Grimshaw, his former partner, Terry Farrell has passed away. Although much more of a post modernist, Farrell produced a couple of striking ventilation towers for Blackwall tunnel with the GLC

No, I don’t know much about the Broadmarsh centre, it looks like it’s being redeveloped?

Some wonderful images; here's the cover of the special "Electricity" issue of the Architectural Review from November 1933 #electricity

flic.kr/p/2nzKgbk
The futuristic cover to the special subject issue of the Architectural Review in November 1933 that covers the subject of electricity. As the cover suggests the magazine covers the modernity of electricity both in terms of its impact on industrial architecture, such as in power generating stations and the National Grid components, as well as the impact of electricity as a power source, for lighting and heating, on domestic, commercial and industrial architecture. The articles are amazing.

The cover is signed "Van Der Horst" and I know who I would like this to be but - I suspect it is the British photographer Adrian Van Der Horst who did other works for AR around this time. It shows an oblique view up towards a transmission tower with substation insulators below. The title and dates are in an angular 'deco/jazz' style lettering.

This week we have been exploring the Electric Age, when electricity and gas showrooms sprang up on the nation's high streets, decked out in streamlined curves and plate glass windows, read more about them here www.modernism-in-metroland.co.uk/blog/power-t...
