i would like to see an indie game succeed and put some real fear of god into the pokemon company/game freak. not just because it pisses me off how comfortable they are with being so shitty and lazy and incompetent, but because if there's any time to try to dethrone the king, it's now

i wish games riffing on pokemon would focus more on differentiating themselves from it rather than the sentiment effectively being "you like pokemon? well, try out our take on it". the fact that "pokemon with guns" blew up so much should tell you how much people want something different

i feel like most games attempting to compete with pokemon try to compete head-on with its style. maybe there's deviation in gameplay but i haven't seen any game that really does something truly unique and eye-catching in terms of artstyle, design sensibilities, etc.

most people won't give a single fuck about a game if it doesn't actually look good. that's simply the way it is. when it comes to first impressions (which are always what it comes to first), gameplay is secondary

i think pokemon needs way more serious competition so i don't really care if some pals look "too similar" to some pokemon, but it's regardless a risky move. but also, you aren't seriously competing if your aesthetics don't at least approach the level of what you're up against

is there a monster-catching game other than palworld that is actually able to compete with pokemon on the aesthetics front? i feel like a big reason palworld even got its foot in the door is because they didn't fumble that, but they avoided the fumble by (maybe) flying too close to the sun.
