there’s also a lot of older anime on hoopla too! that’s how i re-watched strawberry panic and monthly girls’ nozaki-kun. it’s actually kind of wild how much media we have access to for free from libraries

i am seeing a rise in people talking about and using digital library services for books, but reminder that movies and music are also available from libraries too! tv shows are still mostly physical access with dvds, but ive seen hoopla’s catalog expanding to include iwtv

maybe im naive but i think if we as a collective audience were able to turn youtube and vine and tiktok into such huge platforms, we could likely do the same for digital library services

maybe this is easy for me to say as someone who has never cared about prestige or awards, but i think we would be a lot better off if we stopped putting so much energy into getting these big studios and distributors to acknowledge our work and released things in a way where we have more control

anyway, i have no knowledge of how streaming royalties work, but i do wish independent filmmakers would consider kanopy or hoopla or any other library service in their release strategies. they’re not perfect platforms, but it would increase accessibility to so much good programming

hbo max is a huge, egregious example of this. ever since the discovery merger, there’s so much reality tv and discovery channel programming flooding the main browsing page despite the fact that ive never watched any of it

i know the algorithms are supposed to be personalized so in theory i shouldn’t be seeing that stuff, but ive found that on most services nowadays, it literally doesn’t matter what you watch, they will still show you their original content that they want more ppl to see

these aren’t even the types of movies i watched this year, but they’re literally so inescapable whenever you try to just scroll on any mainstream streaming service, it feels irresponsible to have so much programming that skews that way

idk it pisses me off seeing how much straight to streaming slop comes out on a yearly basis because that feels like so much wasted money and resources. we dont need any more unknown white male actors making vapid vigilante wish fulfillment action movies

like there’s literally so much queer poc cinema that plays at sundance or tribeca or any other festival that usually never gets a distribution deal and that seems criminal

admittedly a lot of the movies were bad, and i kinda knew they would be going in, but i think the sad part for me is that there are many good movies that came out this year that i won’t ever have access to see because i dont go to film festivals or movie theaters in general
