The hotel room was spacious and luxurious—fitting for someone with Mydei's fame—but cold, like every other room he had stayed in throughout his career. The curtains didn’t close properly, letting the faint city lights seep in. It would’ve been a beautiful sight to enjoy, if only Mydei wasn’t already too tired to care. He kicked off his boots, tuned the thermostat higher, and pulled the curtains shut as best as he could. Tour day 7. Voice half shot. Back sore. He was thinking of jumping straight into bed—clothes and hygiene be damned—when the key card clicked. The door beeped. Someone entered. For a split second, Mydei tensed. Then his shoulders relaxed as the realization hit. He had told his manager, who had told the front desk, to hand over his spare key card to someone very specific. Someone he missed enough to count down the days. Phainon stepped inside, dragging a carry-on and looking just as travel-worn. Flight uniform jacket slung over one arm, sleeves rolled up. Tired eyes, yet smiling. Always smiling at him. Mydei’s heartbeat kicked up, like it always did when he saw Phainon after a stretch apart. "Hey," Mydei said. His voice came out too gravelly for his liking. "I thought you’d be asleep already," Phainon said, setting down his luggage. They met halfway across the room, and Phainon kissed his forehead, then his cheeks. He smelled like recycled airplane air, aftershave, and those odd snacks he always seemed to enjoy buying from the airport kiosks. It was familiar. It was home. The Phainon that he missed so dearly. "I just got in too," Mydei murmured, leaning into the hug, head resting on Phainon’s shoulder. They didn’t say anything else for a while. Just held on. "You eaten?" Phainon asked as they pulled apart. His fingers were already in Mydei’s braid, undoing the cuffs and gently working out the tangles. "Tour catering," Mydei sighed. "Cold pasta. Only ate it so I wouldn't collapse mid-performance." "My poor Mydei," Phainon made a small pitying sound, brushing Mydei's bangs from his face gently. "Good thing that I ordered soup for you. Should be here soon." "Really?" Phainon nodded and pulled him over to the sofa so they could sit while waiting. “I checked your setlist. Figured your throat would be wrecked. More glad I did it now that I know what your dinner was like." And it was. Of course Phainon had checked. Of course he would order soup. Mydei’s cheeks warmed. He leaned over to kiss the corner of Phainon’s lips. “Thank you.” “Anything for you, dear Mydei,” Phainon grinned. “Although next time, can you land your kiss further to the left?” “We both probably taste gross right now, so maybe wait till we’re clean,” Mydei chuckled softly. “Honestly, I thought you wouldn’t make it tonight. That your layover would be too short.” Phainon hummed smugly. “Pulled some strings. Called in a favor. Switched with a guy who owes me.” “You and your tricks,” Mydei laughed, gently pinching his cheek. They hadn't changed their clothes and were exhausted, but here they were. At the same time. In the same place. For the first time in what felt like forever. Five minutes later, room service knocked. Phainon stood, muttered a tired “thanks,” and returned with exaggerated ceremony, carrying the bowl with both hands like a sacred offering to royalty. “Your finest soup, Your Highness. May it appease the palate of the magnificent Prince of Kremnos,” he said, bowing. Mydei nodded, continuing the small act. “Come, Lord Phainon. Sit with me and let us enjoy the feast.” Both of their lips twitched in amusement. A feast of one bowl of soup which they shared at a table meant for four. Passing the spoon back and forth, just like they used to—when Mydei was still trying to get noticed for his songs, and Phainon was juggling three jobs to fund flight school. How far they had come since then. Phainon’s fingers brushed his across the table and lingered, warm and steady. He was looking at him, eyes showing that he remembered it too. What a sap. Both of them. When the soup was gone, Phainon tugged him gently toward the bathroom. They were the kind of people who couldn’t sleep feeling dirty. Brushing their teeth side by side reminded Mydei of home, of their own penthouse, of all the small things they rarely got to enjoy at the same time.
