Books, video games, movies. (Meath, Ireland).
This is brilliant. Indeed, like all of Max Hasting’s books. Focuses just on Sword (the British beach), mostly on the day but a little on the days following. You are down at the level of the infantry, the commandos and the airborne, step by step. 5⭐️

The dolly shot in the bar in Blood Simple (actually most of the bar scenes) are brilliant.

Making my way through McCarthy’s early work (later work are all so good) and this one is something else. It’s as dark as you can get. You can absolutely see No Country for Old Men in it.

This is my favourite Hemingway so far (of the novels). Jake and Brett are hilarious, the trip to Spain and bullfighting are somehow riveting, and the writing is his usual spare and precise and powerful.

Tarantino has produced two great books already, now that he is (potentially) retired from directing. The novelisation of his last movie was brilliant and it adds considerably to the story. This series of essays on movies during his formative years is great fun and so interesting:

I found this novel to be fairly incredible. It is indeed quite bleak at times, but Esther is so funny and interesting and complicated I can see why the book has such a passionate readership:

I would say that this is her best so far, which is saying something. It’s a great novel. There has been some criticism of the Joycean style, but I think she delivers.

Loved this: Dawkin’s work is always interesting and he is a brilliant communicator of complex topics.
