It’s bad enough that workers aren’t getting paid. It’s worse that some NIH employees are still expected to work in short-staffed positions. Losing direct care staff potentially increases the suffering/potential death of NIH patients. Cruelty in real-time.

ICE will reportedly hire contractors to surveil social media platforms 24/7 to target people for deportations.

The information would then be funneled into an existing ICE database built by Palantir (founded by Trump ally Peter Thiel).

"The party of small government,” folks.

The wealth of the richest 1% in America just hit a record $52 trillion. These are the people getting huge tax cuts — paid for by cuts to health care for millions of Americans. Every lie Trump and Republicans are telling right now about the shutdown is meant to distract you from this.

In any other country, if federal agents fired upon journalists when unprovoked — what would we call it?

If federal agents marched down streets demanding papers — what would we say?

Authoritarianism — let’s not pretend it’s something else when it happens in our American cities.

What if NIH had been 40% smaller?

"We analyze 27 years of NIH extramural awards & their review scores to identify the bottom 40% of grants that would have been eliminated from 1980 to 2007... We then identify new molecular entity drugs, approved in the 21st century, that are linked to these grants"

🚨BREAKING: Pennsylvania Supreme Court RULES that election officials violated voter’s rights by rejecting mail-in ballots with technical errors without notifying voters. Voters must be given notice their ballots won’t count so they can challenge the disqualification or cast a provisional ballot.

Tomorrow is #WorldCancerResearchDay, a day to recognize the impact of cancer research and the strong public support for it. We released a survey indicating that 89% of voters support federal funding for medical research, and 83% support increased funding for cancer research.

A federal judge, Rita F. Lin, has ordered the National Institutes of Health to release hundreds of millions of dollars in research funding that had been frozen at the University of California, Los Angeles. Thank you, Judge Lin!

Increase in productivity since 1979: 87%

Increase in hourly pay since 1979: 32%

Just so happens that ~25% of workers were unionized in 1979. Today? 10%.

As unions declined, the super-rich have taken a larger share of wealth generated by labor. We must build back union power.

“It is the sense of the committee that a prescription [should be required] for COVID vaccination”

This would reduce uptake dramatically.

This is the most SUCCESSFUL VACCINE IN HISTORY!
It is miraculous and lifesaving!

These antivaxxers will kill us all.

Okay. ACIP meeting is over. Here are the four things they voted on with regard to Covid vaccines. Votes 1, 3 and 4 passed. Vote 2 (the call for a prescription requirement) did NOT pass.

The language is so unclear that two legal experts I've consulted so far don't know what this means for access.
Covid-19 Vaccines — Vote #1

It is the sense of the committee that the CDC engages in an effort to promote more consistent and comprehensive informed consent processes, and as part of that considers adding language accessible to patients and medical providers to describe at least the six risks and uncertainties included in the WG chair presentation. Covid-19 vaccines — vote #2

It is the sense of the committee that state and local jurisdictions should require a prescription for the administration of a Covid-19 vaccination. Covid-19 vaccines — vote #3

It is the sense of the committee that in conversations with patients before Covid-19 vaccination, authorized healthcare providers discuss the risks and benefits of the vaccination for the individual patient. The discussion should consider known risk factors for severe outcomes from Covid-19, such as age, prior infections, immunosuppression, and certain comorbidities identified by the CDC, and include a discussion of the potential benefits and risks of vaccination and related uncertainties, especially those outlined in the vaccine information statement, as part of informed consent. Covid-19 vaccines — vote #4

The pediatric and adult immunization schedules for administration of FDA-approved Covid-19 vaccines should be updated as follows:

Adults 65 and older: Vaccination based on individual-based decision-making, also known as shared clinical decision making

Individuals 6 months to 64 years: Vaccination based on individual-based decision-making — with an emphasis that the risk-benefit of vaccination is most favorable for individuals who are at an increased risk for severe Covid-19 disease and lowest for individuals who are not at an increased risk, according to the CDC list of Covid-19 risk factors.

After years of complaining about cancel culture, the current administration has taken it to a new and dangerous level by routinely threatening regulatory action against media companies unless they muzzle or fire reporters and commentators it doesn’t like.

Political violence and threats are not the answer.

This is a watershed moment — we can choose to stay silent and live in fear, or we can choose to be loud for peace and compassion.

We must work together to stop this crisis, and it should start from the top with the President.
