Statements in support of academic freedom ring hollow if we do not support our peers when *their* freedom is under threat.

Chicago colleagues, please consider signing this petition urging Paul Alivisatos to sign the AAC&U letter and join in collective efforts to defend academic freedom.

With research universities in the US under threat, this statement from Page Fortna offers a glimmer of hope. There is still leadership potential at our universities. Page used to be the Chair of Political Science, where I got my degree. This statement from her makes me once more proud of Columbia.

Without the leadup, the quote taken by the NYT from my speech lost some of its rhetorical punch, but at least they didn’t print outright lies about what we said like Fox News did, so I’ll take it.
Proud to stand with colleagues in defense of Columbia (someone’s gotta do it).
Columbia Faculty Protests as Trump Officials Hail University Concessions
While some professors rallied to criticize the changes, federal officials called the university’s actions a “positive first step” in maintaining a financial relationship.

Is the promise of American Acedmia for which many of us sacrificed so much, about to be eroded? It certainly is starting to look that way. From Paul Mussgrave "The Closing of the American Minds" open.substack.com/pub/musgrave...

This is a long way of saying that if this happened to Mahmood, the same could happen to hundreds; no, thousands of students, post-docs, and faculty, as well. And when it does, who is going to teach your kids, and what universities will you even send them to?
monikanalepa.bsky.social
Most of us arrive here on student visas that expire unless we get an academic job, and even then, we have to first apply for a 3-year visa before even being eligible to apply for a green card. The green card is the holy grail of permanent status.
monikanalepa.bsky.social
Perhaps he was even arrested while walking into one of the buildings where I lived/ Mahmood was a green card holder. Many of my friends might not know this, but very few foreign-born students are green card holders.
monikanalepa.bsky.social
Twenty years ago, I was learning to teach at Columbia University, and for all I know, I could have TA-ed a student like Mahmood Khalil, who has been arrested by ICE and flown out of state by ICE agents, all while holding a green card.

The choice of Columbia in particular shows that there's *no* amount of suppression of pro-Palestinian speech a university can engage in that will insulate and protect it; so might as well try to do the right thing, which Columbia has determinedly avoided since October 7.

17.5 years ago deep into Sidhwa,Lahiri, and even Rushdie I thought to myself ‘I’d like to go to India.’ The short term consequence was what would be today ‘swiping right’ on my now husband’s match.com profile, but the point is, I finally made it to India! And 24 hours in, it has not disappointed.
