also it's funny that i've never seen anyone complain about the opposite! why does mizuki's life have to center around rui when his life never centers around her. that's the ultimate question and the one fandom doesn't like to confront.

all of her card events frequently have her lingering on niigo, wishing she was with them instead of her high school friends, wishing she be with them forever, etc. so overstating rui's importance feels like it's missing the point to me ...

i remember during mizu6 there was discourse on prsktwt over mizuki not bringing up rui as one of the people who inspired her which is crazy when the entire event is about her basking in the unconditional love and acceptance she received from the girls in her life

it isn't that rui was unimportant to her, but that was a point in mizuki's life without any positive growth and rui ultimately was nothing but a life raft in the middle of the ocean to hang onto on occassion until niigo pulled her ashore.

they shared those painful feelings in the moment, but they weren't the person the other truly needed (mizuki wanted to be surrounded by girls and rui wanted to put on shows with others), so they're happy about the other finding happiness and their place to belong now.

mizuki and rui are like, that's a trans lesbian and her gay guy friend turned important acquaintance (i think you can argue they're distant friends, i guess) who care about each other a lot and were both isolated and ostracized.

i was trying to be a little cagey about why i think people don't mention her in the original post, but i think it has a lot to do with: 1) people not being able to imagine a trans girl who's a lesbian and 2) the fandom misunderstanding her dynamic with rui.

she's not overt about it bc she has a complicated relationship with desire — she lives in a perpetual state of repression out of fear of coming across as predatory and feels guilty about wanting to be with niigo bc she thinks she's asking too much due to the baggage she brings to the relationship.

her arc literally revolves around how much her relationships with girls mean to her, which is why it's so important that in mizu6 the ones who inspire her to finally start living for herself and embark on a journey to discover her dreams are the girls in her life!

i think people just can't fathom that a trans girl who's also a lesbian exists, even though mizuki's entire arc is about how much she loves girls and wants to connect with them on a deeper level as a girl. it's about camaraderie between girls and lesbianism is just the logical conclusion of this.

and the way she gets outed is this romance being recoded into violence by the boys who consider her desirable but with a caveat due to her transness! the conclusion of this in ena5 is also mizuena getting married symbolically!

it has so many hallmarks of the typical yuri plot, it's crazy! they're such a prototypical yuri couple but in all the best ways! mizuki's struggles around trans disclosure and her fixation on atonement for being 'deceptive' are kind of impossible to divorce from romance.

even their narrative reads as deliberately romantic, with things like ena wanting to wait for mizuki's answer forever, mizuki wanting to 'confess' a secret on the rooftop at the end of the cultural festival or her conversation with ena in the alleyway reading like a breakup attempt.

i think it's lowkey misogyny that mizuki never gets to be a part of the conversation when people discuss the biggest lesbians in proseka like an, minori or saki. mizuena have keitai renwa + every cover they get is about romantic love.
