Upgraded to a Philips 774 in 1978 and finally a NAD 6040 in 1981. I still have them all, though I'm not sure how many still work. I bought a belt set for the 6040 which I must get round to fitting ...

My first recording device was a birthday or Christmas present, a Philips N2207, circa 1976, which had a DIN line-in. It was only mono, but so was the Braun Atelier radiogram I was recording from. I recorded the original HHGTG on it and all sorts of things. www.radiomuseum.org/r/philips_ca...

Gosh — that reminds me! I drew a design for the interior of my house using Euclid and rendered it using ray-tracing with ArcLight. Did I keep the boxes and manuals, though, that's the thing ...

Cars are amazing inventions, but it is the thoughtless use of cars that is choking our cities. I propose using existing cameras to ration use of cars to a number of days a year: enough for when a car is genuinely practical, too few to use a car every day, so people consider other options first.

I'm surprised that petrol and diesel cars have (roughly) the same footprint. Also, are all seats occupied in all vehicles?

I love the look of the yellow acrylic, but if it was so much better, why do Rega, who must have the greatest experience of anyone with their own product, persist with felt? Linn also still prefer a felt mat.

Goodness me. Thanks for that, and sorry I didn't scroll down to read the update.

I too was alarmed after reading your post (reposted by @markmiodownik.bsky.social‬) but having looked up WeTransfer Terms of Service, last updated July 15, 2025, I do not see the inflammatory section of paragraph 6.3 you reported beginning "Such license". Are you sure someone hasn't made it up?

Have you tried the real Absinthe? Now back on shelves since it is more likely artists went mad because they were drinking moonshine rather than "La Fée Verte" itself. It's far less sweet than pastis, hence the whole sugar spoon ritial. I prefer it without sugar, just 5:1 water/absinthe.

Thanks! I took it apart to rewire it and was very careful only to clean and not to damage the original paint. The original earth post was at the bottom bracket. I tried to earth both bottom and top which resulted in some untidy heat shrink insulation. I feel a Mark 2 coming on ...

My Dad was at de Havilland where he coveted the Anglepoise 1209s in the drawing office. During modernisation with strip lighting, he made sure he was in the right place to acquire one. I like to think I now change records under the same lampshade that the Mosquito was designed.

Range Rovers are an amazing feat of British automotive engineering of which we should be proud. They are peerless in their element, but as inappropriate on urban streets as HMS Queen Elizabeth would be as a Thames pleasure boat.

30 years ago I commuted by bicycle every day from Barnes to Kennington Lane via Nine Elms and around Vauxhall's one-way system. It was challenging, but cyclists could see over cars in those days and cars could both see us and hear us more easily. It's not the same now. Cycle lanes will be welcome.

All those years I loaded film into developing tanks when I should have been wearing gloves!

It is very difficult to persuade people used to buying a product for £x to buy one for £1.5x or £2x only because it lasts longer. Even If it lasts four times as long, or can be infinitely repaired, few people will fork out extra for that. For most, sticker price is more important.

You'd better get to the bottom of it.

The Science Museum used to have an exhibit that monitored pollution from sensors on the roof with graphs of results back to the late 19th Century. The message to children of the 70s (like me) was how much cleaner London's air had become since the 1956 Clean Air Act. I wish it was still there.

An update on the A5000. I checked components and continuity, neutralised and cleaned alkaline residue and fitted a modern 1.2V NiMh on extension wires miles out of harms way. The CMOS remembers what it's told. The whole computer is working superbly well!

Even as a vinyl junkie I recommend adding a digital streamer to that extra input. It's all about the music. The latest releases, re-mastered from original session tapes in 96 kHz or 192 kHz 24-bit formats are very good, and good value, especially when the original vinyl has gone stratospheric.

I have a lot of Braun equipment, from the Dieter Rams era, and badly wanted a TG1020 until I found out how expensive blank tape is (let alone pre-recorded reels). What would I use it for, anyway? Once upon a time it would have been to record live performances off the radio. Now, not so much.

Very gratifying. I remember the same moving up to a more powerful amp, even though both were essentially the same design. It's was like the beefier one is nicely in its comfort zone.
