Siphonophores are champions of community collaboration. 🤝🏆
This isn't one animal. It's actually a colony of individual animals called zooids. Each has a specialized role. From the orb-like swimming nectophores to the bright orange stinging tentacles, they're essential to the survival of all.

Our seabirds' social behaviors also help set them apart. In the wild, common murres form dense colonies to stop their eggs from rolling off the steep cliffs where they breed. These black-and-white beauties often huddle together on exhibit, while puffins tend to be more solitary.

Tufted puffins are called “parrots of the sea” for their famously flashy breeding season colors. But when there’s no pressure to show off for potential mates, they dress down for winter in more understated black feathers. 🖤

Today, the California coast we cherish and the delicate ocean ecosystems just beyond it face a renewed threat from offshore drilling. We oppose the Trump Administration’s 5-year oil and gas leasing program and will continue to defend our coastline, wildlife, economy, and health from this threat.

But what is COP30? It is a yearly summit where countries come together to talk about climate change. And today, the ocean is on the agenda. In the absence of U.S. representation, individual states like California, as well as U.S.-based organizations working on climate change, are taking a stand.

A smack of jellies, squadron of pelicans, raft of otters, or galaxy of sea stars...

No matter your favorite collective noun, these groups of animals are a force to be reckoned with when they come together—a simple reminder of the beauty that blooms in community and the strength that grows in unity.
