This tendency is not a product of social media but it is made apparent by it
It’s this nightmarish epistemological mechanism where truth and falsehood are adjudicated almost entirely on the basis of whether or not a claim is pleasing to the audience. It’s awful for understanding the world but our entire politics is now built on it.
