I swear by it…Viktor trembled, forehead pressed gently against his partner's. Jayce's words echoed in his ears, slowly warping as his mind replayed the experience of the Arcane unfurling around him, the imprint of uncounted other Victors contained within.…swear by it……swear it……I swear it…It was overwhelming, the absolute conviction that Jayce offered him. Devotion so total that it transcended the timelines, offered to Viktor countless times over. "Always… how can you always..?" Concerned, Jayce reached up to cup Viktor's face in his hands, trying to draw Viktor back to himself. "Vik? What is it?"Viktor struggled to find his voice, to find words to explain the sheer enormity of what was unfolding in his mind. "Jayce… you were almost taken. The Arcane did not merely pull — it ripped, it tore at you." In his mind he could still see it: Jayce, lying curled on the ground while the Arcane flares around him. The sound of his agony as he fought to hold himself intact. "I feared… I feared that you would be lost. That this would be the anomaly that pulled you from me. There was nothing I could do, except wait… wait and have faith that you would be strong enough." Not for a second had Viktor even considered letting go. After so many weeks and months of having his partner back, the very idea was unthinkable. He had been determined to remain with Jayce until the end, however that end came to be."In that moment I saw it. I saw the endless realities. I saw you. And myself."Two figures kneel in the snow, surrounded by stones that carry an echo of the Arcane.'Will you love me then?''I wouldn't know how to stop.'They meet in a kiss, in several kisses, before turning to walk back to their dwelling in silence.A single tear makes its way down Viktor's cheek. "It was overwhelming, Jayce. To feel so intensely these emotions, over and over."Two heads rest together in perfect trust. From their cupped hands spills a blaze of light, a single rune held between them. Around them the Arcane dances and twists, fighting to pull them apart. 'We finish this together…'"And in every timeline, I felt myself wanting you. Whether you were alive or not." A solitary figure reclines on a couch, goggles pushed up to rest on his head, wrapped in bandages from his latest surgery. In his hands he cradles a book, pages worn with time and use, and spilling over with notes. He speaks aloud as though conversing with another, discussing research and comparing findings. For a moment he runs his hands gently across the cover, almost a caress. His fingers rest gently against the large T embossed upon the cover.Desperately Viktor pressed closer to Jayce, as if struggling to ground himself with touch. To remind himself that he was real, that they were real. "I don't know what to do with this information. With the feelings. It makes me feel reckless." He drew in a shuddering breath, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Like I want to believe you will stay."Tenderly Jayce wrapped his arms around Viktor, trying to impart as much warmth and reassurance as he possibly could. "I want to stay, V. You don't have to believe it right now. But I hope someday you will. Because I want you, too." Pulling back, he met Viktor's gaze directly. In his eyes, Viktor could dimly see the reflection of all the Jayces whose presence had surged through each time the Arcane has splintered reality around him. "All timelines… all possibilities…" Carefully he pressed a soft kiss to Viktor's forehead."It's only you… always you."

It took weeks for Jayce's arms to heal. Weeks, during which Viktor treated his care as the privilege that it was. But time wound down, as Viktor knew it would, until the day finally arrived to remove the bandages and examine the results.Of course Viktor already knew what he would find. The Arcane had been dormant since the surgery, with no signs of flux, not a single transformation. Still, he would take no further chances with Jayce. And so he carefully unwrapped the bandages, testing each incision mark carefully."As expected. Your vitals have stabilized. The Arcane has slowed to a crawl…" Viktor keeps his focus on Jayce's arms as he speaks, unable to bear facing Jayce's emotions. From the corner of his eye, he sees the glint of a glass vial shining from his workbench. "You're no longer in danger, Jayce…" Despite everything, he is relieved to be able to speak these words. The thought of Jayce ripped away, unmade by the Arcane… it is unbearable. Even being separated by the borders of the cities would be preferable… "Yet, you don't sound happy about it, V." Despite his words, Jayce sounds oddly calm. Strange, Viktor expected a stronger reaction. Still, he does not want Jayce to question Viktor's sincerity, or how highly Viktor values him. "It's nothing. I'm just readjusting my levels..." Viktor can't bring himself to finish the sentence. For when you leave. And things go back… to what they were. His heart screams at the thought. Again, his eyes shift towards his workbench… towards the vial that waits there. How long will he have before Jayce leaves him? Without the threat of the Arcane, there is nothing to hold Jayce here. Will he soon see the Defender striding across the bridge once more? How will he—"You really believe I am going to leave you?"The words shatter the silence like a hammer blow shattering glass.Were Viktor still fully organic, he might have pulled something from how quickly he jerks his head over to stare at his partner. He cannot have heard that correctly. Jayce cannot possibly mean… "What?" he asks weakly.Jayce is smiling warmly, as if. "Just because you cured me?" His voice clearly implies the ridiculousness of the thought.Viktor struggles to make sense of what Jayce is saying. Surely he cannot mean..? "Piltover would not—""Fuck Piltover." Viktor jolts, surprised by Jayce's vehemence. "Fighting the Arcane has fucking sucked. But I have also never been so happy to be by your side. To have my Partner back." Viktor feels frozen in place as Jayce reaches out to tenderly grasp Viktor's hands in his own. Viktor looks down, transfixed by the sight of both his mechanical hand and his organic one resting in Jayce's palms. No difference… he thinks dazedly He touches them both as if there is no difference. "Piltover won't take me back. Not like this. I won't let them, and I sure as hell won't let them condemn you for this." Jayce speaks with such fierce determination, such conviction. For a brief moment Viktor is transported to the past, seeing again a young inventor, passionately defending his theories before the Council. As time passed, Jayce grew more polished, more eloquent — but in Viktor's mind he has never shined as brightly as he did when it was just the two of them in the lab, with nothing but their theories and their dream to help others. Now Viktor looks at Jayce and sees that man again. His heart yearns to make the leap one more time… but the specter of those later years holds him back."You have to understand Jayce. I want to believe you… but I cannot ignore what we became. Why we became it." In his heart he begs Jayce to understand. He would give almost anything, sacrifice almost anything, to have this again — but he cannot sacrifice this. "We can't just run. I cannot run from Zaun. They need me. I need to defend them, for their tomorrow." For so much of his life, Viktor has sworn to help improve the lives of his fellow Zaunites. It has been the driving force behind all he does, his every achievement. He cannot walk away, not even for Jayce.Jayce is unfazed by Viktor's hesitation. In fact, he smiles as if he expected no less. "Then let me stay with you, V — do good for them, together."

I want… I want to see your face, V. Jayce has been Viktor's guest for weeks. In all that time, not once has Viktor removed his mask. It has remained in place, a barrier that prevents any hint of expression from escaping. Only Viktor's eyes can be seen, molten gold against pitch black. Eyes that have always haunted Jayce, but never more so than now. Now that the Baroness of Zaun has visited and revealed a strikingly similar pair of eyes. Ever since that visit, Jayce's mind cannot stop running the same circles… Renata has black eyes. Renata deals in Shimmer. Renata has no implants. Your surgeries were facilitated with Shimmer. Could this mean… when he looks at his partner, could the eyes that stare back still belong to Viktor? He is haunted by the possibility. It is not that Jayce has a problem with the idea of biomechanical augments. Despite the insults he has occasionally spewed in his agonized anger, he is aware that many people of Zaun rely on such aid to have an acceptable quality of life. Viktor's leg, his back, his lungs… they were never going to be healed with traditional medicine. And he is well aware of the pain, even agony, that Viktor suffered on a daily basis. How can he blame Viktor for choosing an option that not only soothes his pain, but gives him the ability to do things he never could before? It was only when he met Viktor's gaze and was faced with eyes he did not recognize, that he began to fear. Gone was the lovely amber gaze he had secretly enjoyed all throughout their partnership — instead glowing yellow on a field of black awaited him. Why?!? his inner self had screamed. Why would you throw away your beautiful eyes?!? There was no lack, no flaw to be had — why would Viktor cast his eyes away? From his place on the floor, Jayce whines. The noise causes Viktor to look down at the hound that rests between his standing legs. "You are a menace, Defender." Contrary to his words, his tone sounds fond, even affectionate. But how can Jayce know for sure, when Viktor's mask remains in the way? I want to see your face, V. Until Renata Glasc had shown her face, Jayce had never considered that something other than augmentation might explain the change in Viktor's eyes. He was unfamiliar with the signs of shimmer usage, especially those that resulted from non-recreational purposes. But seeing the familiar glowing irises and black sclera, Jayce suddenly realized that perhaps he had been wrong all along. Perhaps his eyes remained, changed but still familiar. And if they remained, what else remained beneath the mantle of the Machine Herald? Viktor suddenly crosses the room to make some notes at his desk, and Jayce sits up with a huff. Although he is still in canine form, his mind is still his own. As time passed his efforts to retain control of his mind have become more and more successful, although Viktor is unaware how much more practiced he has become. Normally after an Arcane flux, Jayce is eager to return to human form, fighting within himself to change back as soon as possible. But the hazy memories he carries of his earlier transformations carry a warmth, a feeling of affection. He cannot help but feel as if Viktor allows himself to be softer with the Hound. Tonight he feels desperate for any sign of that tenderness. I want to see your face, V. Viktor has settled at his desk for now, and Jayce moves to join him with another whine. He expects Viktor to ignore his approach and is taken by surprise when Viktor crouches down to meet his eyes, hands gently framing his face. "You've been suspiciously clingy." The hands cupping Jayce's face begin to stroke his cheeks in a soothing motion. "Are you concerned that I might sell you to Renata?" Viktor's tone is warm and incredulous, as if the very idea is ridiculous. And still his mask prevents Jayce from catching any hint of his features. Jayce stares longingly at Viktor's face, as if he can remove the mask through sheer force of will. Were he human, tears would be pooling in his eyes. He has to fight the urge to begin howling his distress. But he holds himself steady, fighting not to give himself away. For several more hours, Viktor continues to work. He moves from his desk, to his workbench, then back to his desk. In all that time, he makes no move to touch his mask. Even without Jayce 'present', he seems determined to keep his guard up. Will he never let Jayce in? Will he always hold Jayce at arms' length? Jayce aches at the thought. The longer he considers it, the greater his distress grows, until he feels frozen with numbness. Eventually he realizes that Viktor is moving to shut down the lab for the night. Normally, Jayce would already be in bed by now. Viktor has given him the single existing bed from day one, insisting that he has no need of sleep. While Jayce knows this is a lie, he's never inquired about Viktor's nighttime routine before now. Curious despite himself, he pads out of the lab and into the living space. Viktor has settled himself on the couch, book in hand… and mask still firmly on his face. Jayce feels his heart sink. The thought of Viktor refusing to remove his mask, even for sleep, fills him with such profound loneliness and sadness he fears he will drown in it. He cannot face returning to the small bedroom to sleep alone. Slowly he edges his way up the couch, ears flattened in distress. Viktor eyes him with surprise, but does not seem to object to his presence. Slowly, carefully, Jayce crawls his way forward until he can rest his head on Viktor's shoulder. Seemingly without conscious thought, Viktor's arm wraps around Jayce's neck to rest on his back. The casual acceptance undoes him. He allows his eyes to slip shut, a single thought continuing to echo through his mind. I want to see your face, V

Deep inside, there is a small part of Viktor that is forced to admit, he is enjoying the sensation of full emotions again. Perhaps he may have to reevaluate his former insistence of total suppression (a thought to be further unpacked later). But for now, he cannot deny it: he is fully enjoying the excitement and anticipation he is currently experiencing. He is at his workbench, preparing to share the designs for his own medical implants, and beside him Jayce waits with visible anticipation. A corner of Viktor's mind wonders why he was so certain that Jayce would find his implants distasteful. For the longest time, he has believed that Jayce looked at him in disdain for his mechanical augmentations. How had his understanding of Jayce drifted so far? He thinks for a moment of the many battles, the many fights… of harsh words spoken in anger. There are many times that Jayce has spoken harshly of his augmentations, has used them as fodder for insults… but has Viktor not done the same? Mocked Jayce's dedication, his love for people, his desire to please? None of these traits are bad, yet Viktor has used them to wound Jayce many times. And perhaps, one again, they have both been in step, following the same patterns..? But Jayce has knelt at his feet and declared that all of him is human. Has rested a palm on his chest, feeling his artificially beating heart, and proclaimed that Viktor's continued existence is all that matters. Has lain entangled with Viktor, on the edge of delirium, and revealed how happy he is that Viktor is no longer cold or in pain. Even Viktor cannot doubt his sincerity any longer. And so he has offered to share his work with his partner once more. Jayce's enthusiastic response has him almost grinning with anticipation. Always so eager… like a bouncing puppy being offered a treat. Ah, you have not changed at all, Jayce. He cannot deny his own eagerness though. He has always been proud, and rightfully so, of his own inventions, his own breakthroughs. And in the field of biomechanical augmentation, he is unparalleled. He has longed to share his advances with someone who will truly understand… an equal. A partner. Now Jayce is at his side once more, waiting to examine his creations and share his thoughts. He cannot fight the excitement building in his chest as he lays out the progression of his mechanical hearts for Jayce to examine. "Behold! MY HEARTS!" Jayce's reaction is everything Viktor could hope for. "Oooooooooh…" Jayce breathes out his admiration as he leans down to get a closer look. It is not arrogant to say that his admiration is warranted — Viktor knows that his design is truly impressive, surpassing anything else currently in use. Once he began modifying it with Hextech, it truly became a thing of wonder. And so he waits to hear what Jayce will say. For a brief moment Jayce remains absolutely enthralled, but then… a strange look crosses his face. He blinks, flattening his lips as though trying to hide his emotion, before turning to Viktor with a slight grin. "Uhh… a little maniacal there, V?" Viktor blinks, frozen in place as his vents engage with a soft hiss. Perhaps… that was a bit dramatic. "Eh… heh." Jayce continues to grin as he returns to staring at the progression of his design. Viktor is currently on his third iteration, so only the blueprints of that one are available. This does not stop Jayce from examining every inch of them, comparing them to the previous models to see what has been altered and improved. He has questions, so many questions. Far from being annoyed, Viktor finds himself basking in the attention. It is as if their years of separation are fading, returning him to the days when they spend all their time huddled together in the lab, theories and designs flying so fast that any outsider would struggle just to make sense of it all. By the time Viktor moves on to explaining his prototype lungs, Jayce has acquired a notepad and pen and begun frantically scribbling notes. The sight of that looping penmanship and the simple 'JT' at the bottom fills him with such nostalgia that he must pause for a moment to regain his composure. Before Jayce can do more than make a concerned face, he has resumed his explanation. It wouldn't do, after all, to have their conversation derailed. Viktor has several more designs to share, and he wishes to hear Jayce's thoughts on all of them.

7am. It was 7am… Who could possibly be..? Viktor shuffled to his front door with a grunt of irritation. It was 7 in the morning. It was Saturday. Janna save him, it was far too early to be dealing with someone banging on his door. Fumbling with the lock, he finally managed to yank the door open, mouth already open to deliver a blistering tirade, and— "Hey, Vik! I was just out for a run, the morning breeze is so nice! I happened to pass that cafe that makes the sweetmilk latte you like, figured I'd grab you one!" Viktor blinked, as if checking to see if the figure on his doorstep was real. Jayce. Jayce Talis, his partner. Jayce Talis, decked out in soft, comfortable sweats, pointedly emblazoned with that signature 'T' crest. Flushed and grinning and holding out two cafe cups with a hopeful look on his handsome face. Viktor blinked again. It was far too early for this…

The revelations of Jayce's notes, the subsequent shock of being discovered by Heimerdinger, and the sudden explosion of the Arcane had left Viktor reeling. After the wild outpouring of energy had finally subsided, Viktor had carefully gathered Jayce to his side and grimly begun the arduous process of retracing their steps, across the bridges and back to Emberflit. Unsurprisingly his partner was a dead weight, all his energy having been spent in his desperate fight against the Arcane flare up. In an effort to bolster Jayce and relieve his own tension after the frantic brush with oblivion, Viktor once again reaches for the familiar byplay between them. "Hold on, Defender. Janna preserve me, why can I never leave you to die?" Even as he muttered the last under his breath, he acknowledged how ridiculous the question was. He was never able to abandon Jayce, to cut him out of his heart. Not after violence, not after betrayal… at this point he's become convinced that even in death Jayce Giopara will remain entwined with his soul. The man imprinted himself there from day one, and try as he might Viktor had never been able to smooth that imprint away. Carefully he guided them through the streets of Zaun and down to Emberflit Alley. Despite their successful escape from Piltover, Viktor's nerves remained on alert, knowing that their vulnerability was exposed. Fortunately after that last major outpouring of energy, it seemed whatever was causing these eruptions had been spent; the Arcane remained dormant, and Jayce experienced no further torment as they shuffled their way into the lab. Unfortunately, Viktor soon discovered that Jayce had not escaped without additional consequences. Immediately after entering, Viktor had attempted to place Jayce in bed where he could rest comfortably. He had only take two step away when Jayce began whining under his breath, sounding remarkably like the hound whenever it became distressed. Looking closer, Viktor could see micro tremors moving up and down Jayce's frame. It wasn't a seizure, but clearly Jayce's muscles had suffered under the onslaught, and it appeared they were making their displeasure known. Even unconscious, Jayce twisted and groaned, clearly still in pain. Viktor quickly stripped off his armor and settled behind Jayce, raising the internal temperature of his augments and covering them both with a blanket. Carefully he wrapped his arms around Jayce's frame, hoping the heat and the restraint would soothe his system and prevent excess movement from causing further pain. Although it was vital to confirm his suspicions, Jayce clearly needed some time to recover from this latest ordeal. As he held Jayce close a part of Viktor basked in the warmth, the comfort, of feeling Jayce breathe, feeling his heart beating under his fingertips. What happened earlier… none of the earlier Arcane eruptions had ever been like that. Normally it was a short burst; wild, but relatively self contained, and relatively formless. In his mind he pictured the scene again: Jayce, curled up on the pavement, with the Arcane surging around him, unfurling like massive wings from his back. He couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to what had happened tonight, that something significant had triggered this outburst. His mind barreled on, forcing him to relive the rest. Rushing to Jayce's side, ignoring every instinct that screamed of danger. Imploring him to fight, to hold on, to not leave Viktor alone again… Realizing that he had done all he could, that it was up to Jayce now… drawing Jayce's head to his, refusing to part (don't take him I can't lose him), closing his eyes and seeing… Gasping, Viktor forcibly pulled himself out of the memory. It's too much, he can't… In an attempt to distract himself he gently began to run his hands through Jayce's hair. He closed his eyes and allowed Jayce to fill his senses: the softness of his hair, the scent of his skin, the warmth of his breathing. Gradually he felt himself calming. Hopefully, tomorrow they would finally have answers. Tonight, he pulled his partner closer and allowed his mind to find comfort in his presence.

Pounding feet. Labored breath. The sound of nails clicking on the pavement. "Hurry Jayce. We need to get back to the lab." Viktor runs through the streets of Piltover as quickly as his augmented legs will carry him, Jayce a steady presence at his side. They have been moving at speed for almost an hour, and still it feels too slow. Inside his head, Viktor is fuming. How could he have made such an obvious mistake? It matters not that Arcane residue is an expected byproduct of frequent Hextech use, Viktor should have dug deeper. If he had, so much of this might have been avoided. So much of Jayce's pain might have been avoided… They have almost reached the bridges. Only a short distance more, and they will be safely in Zaun, with less chance of being accosted and delayed in their return. Viktor is bracing himself against the possibility of a skirmish at the first bridge when he's caught off guard by the sudden Thump of a body hitting the ground behind him. But he had no sense of anyone approaching them, which means… Quickly his head whips around to search for his partner. "Jayce?" The site that greets him is enough to send a bolt of panic down his augmented spine. Jayce is sprawled on the pavement, once again reverted to human form. He writhes on the ground, clutching his head in his hands. Even from here Viktor can hear the small whimpers and bitten off groans coming from his mouth. But this is not what captures Viktor's attention. The Arcane is positively streaming from Jayce's body, in a riot of color. "Vik…" It is the only thing Jayce manages to force out before his face twists in a rictus of agony. Around him the Arcane is flaring to life, unfurling from his shoulders like the wings of a butterfly, in a display that would be beautiful were it not engulfing his partner. "JAYCE!" "Argh! Viktor… Viktor, please… it hurts! I feel like… like I'm being torn apart!" Heedless of the danger, Viktor rushes back to Jayce's side. This close he can practically feel the distortion shimmering in the air, as if the Arcane is threatening to pull the fabric of reality apart, with Jayce at the center of it. He can feel the strain against his own body, despite the resilience of his augments. Frantically he reaches out, cupping Jayce's face and lifting it to stare into his eyes. "Fight it, Jayce. Don't let the Arcane consume you. Stay with me." Pressed so closely together, Viktor can see how hard Jayce is fighting. His teeth are clenched so tightly it's a wonder he has not cracked them, and his every muscle is locked, resisting the pull with everything he has. But Viktor can also see the terror in those blue eyes, underneath the tears streaming down Jayce's face. Underneath the pain, Jayce is terrified. He struggles, but he cannot hold in his pained cries. They mix with the shriek of the anomaly, tearing at Viktor's nerves. Raging at his own helplessness, Viktor draws Jayce's forehead to meet his own. Please! he silently begs. You cannot have him. You cannot take him from me. If you will not be satisfied without him, you will will have to accept us both; I will not let him go! There is nothing more he can do; he cannot fight this battle in Jayce's stead. Grimly he closes his eyes and presses himself closer. There is no turning back now; he has made his choice. Either Jayce will manage to hold back the Arcane one more time, or they will be swallowed by the shifting tides. Viktor holds his partner close and waits for their fate to make itself known.

"Fight it, Defender. Keep the Arcane under control." Even with all his enhancements, Viktor strains to keep hold of his former partner. His former partner, who is once again writhing and twisting under the force of the corruption. Despite the growling and snarling, Viktor can see the fear and despair in Jayce's eyes. Each time the transformation hits harder, carrying the fear that this will be the final change. They have not made as much progress as he has hoped. And even with his suppressors turned up as high as he dares, his emotions are becoming… volatile. Each time, the sight of the tears streaming down Jayce's face from the fear and pain threatens to undo him. The nagging thought that he may fail, may let Jayce down… NO. Carefully he shifts, keeping a firm grasp of Jayce's chest. Between himself and Jayce, they have both brains and stubbornness to match anyone in Zaun or Piltover. He refuses to accept that there is anything he and his partner cannot conquer. "You can manage that," he whispers. And he watches as just a bit of the fear fades from Jayce's eyes. It feels as if time drags on indefinitely. Viktor continues to whisper both encouragements and endearments as he holds Jayce, feeling his muscles straining under both the force of the Arcane corruption, and Jayce's own struggle to fight his transformation. But at last he stills. Although visibly exhausted by the effort, he is still himself. Viktor can no longer tell if his suppressors are functioning. The sight of his partner, worn and trembling, is enough to undo him completely. Viktor tears off his mask and meets Jayce's mouth with his own, needing to feel him, to taste him. Jayce Giopara had never felt more useless. He stared down at the notes in front of him, struggling to keep his emotions in check. This isn't working… none of this makes sense. So much for my 'brilliance', I can't even manage simple Arcane research. They were dangerous thoughts for him to entertain, he knew. Jayce had always been emotional, quick to jump on any perceived failure or flaw. Normally his high intelligence and natural aptitude for the sciences made this a rare occurrence. Although his confidence and even arrogance could be off-putting, there was no denying that he was brilliant. As a result his successes were many, but as a consequence it meant that he was ill-equipped to handle the rare instances of failure. The constant setbacks and dead ends were beginning to affect Jayce's mood, making him tense and snappish. When Viktor brought word that a group of Enforcers had been seen near Emberflit, things erupted. Although there was not a single indication that they were here because of him, he immediately began to assume the worst. His mind replayed the argument that ensued. Viktor… this isn't good. I should leave. I've stayed too long already… Oh? Missing the comforts of Piltover already, Man of Progress? You know that's not what this is about. But the longer I'm here, the more risk I bring with me. If I'm discovered… Yes, yes, the scandal would be immense. We can't have that perfect reputation tarnished by such filthy association. It's not about my reputation, it's about your safety! If there was trouble because of me… Not everything is about you. It wasn't until Viktor stepped back, breaking the growing tension, that Jayce realized the Arcane had begun swirling around his shoulders, threatening another eruption. Viktor had stormed out soon after, declaring the conversation at an end. Jayce had been left to carry on their research alone, but he was tense and unable to focus. It wasn't just the argument that left him unsettled. Jayce had never spent so much time in Zaun before, and the reality of it left him reeling. He had always been aware, in a general sense, of the immense disparity between the sister cities, but seeing the stark reality was something else. Viktor had always advocated for advancement that would benefit his people. He had worked tirelessly to draw attention to the many issues that plagued the people of Zaun, mots notably the pollution that choked the air, the water, the very ground they walked on. In those early days, both he and Jayce had been filled with optimism, convinced that they could make a difference. When had that changed? When had Jayce allowed the constant demands from the Council, from Society, drown out his determination? He had created Hextech to help people — when had it become more about the Clan's and their approval, rather than his own ideals? Again he looked down at his half-formed notes, the bleak sense of failure wrapping around him once again. What am I even doing here? What's the point of continuing when everything I do is meaningless? I swore I would make a difference, would help, but all I've delivered has been empty promises. No wonder V walked out… this isn't worth his time. Why had he dragged himself down here to burden his old friend with his problems? Surely Viktor must be disgusted at the sight of him…Staring across the lab he was suddenly hit with the sense memory of Viktor's hands, carefully and gently examining his arms. Patiently listening as he unburdened himself. Viktor had allowed him to speak, without judgment. Unbidden his mind replayed Viktor's words. We… can still do good… Defender… Jayce looked around the lab, suddenly feeling like he was seeing it for the first time. The boards filled with soil analysis, wind models, diagrams of the waterways and runoff… Multiple blueprints, with careful notations in a familiar hand… All of it was an effort to improve conditions, to better the quality of life here. And still Viktor took him in, devoted time and energy into helping him research his own problem. He looked down at his own research again, his fruitless struggle to make any progress. Why was he wasting his time with this? Better to focus on something that he was actually capable of doing. Right… time to focus on something that really matters. Resolutely Jayce pushed aside his research notes and reached for one of Viktor's blueprints. He was still a scientist, still an inventor. Here was something tangible he could do, something that would benefit someone. And it was the least of what he owed Viktor, both now and for their past mistakes. "Alright…" he muttered. "Let's crank this build up!"

"Fight it, Defender. Keep the Arcane under control." Even with all his enhancements, Viktor strains to keep hold of his former partner. His former partner, who is once again writhing and twisting under the force of the corruption. Despite the growling and snarling, Viktor can see the fear and despair in Jayce's eyes. Each time the transformation hits harder, carrying the fear that this will be the final change. They have not made as much progress as he has hoped. And even with his suppressors turned up as high as he dares, his emotions are becoming… volatile. Each time, the sight of the tears streaming down Jayce's face from the fear and pain threatens to undo him. The nagging thought that he may fail, may let Jayce down… NO. Carefully he shifts, keeping a firm grasp of Jayce's chest. Between himself and Jayce, they have both brains and stubbornness to match anyone in Zaun or Piltover. He refuses to accept that there is anything he and his partner cannot conquer. "You can manage that," he whispers. And he watches as just a bit of the fear fades from Jayce's eyes. It feels as if time drags on indefinitely. Viktor continues to whisper both encouragements and endearments as he holds Jayce, feeling his muscles straining under both the force of the Arcane corruption, and Jayce's own struggle to fight his transformation. But at last he stills. Although visibly exhausted by the effort, he is still himself. Viktor can no longer tell if his suppressors are functioning. The sight of his partner, worn and trembling, is enough to undo him completely. Viktor tears off his mask and meets Jayce's mouth with his own, needing to feel him, to taste him. At first glance it looked like such an innocuous pile of metal. When Jayce had woken up the quiet stillness told him that Viktor had left lab already. While not exactly common, it was becoming less surprising to wake up and find himself alone in the building. Slowly the two men were rebuilding their trust in each other, falling back into their old rhythms of collaboration, experimentation, and building. As he became increasingly reassured of Jayce's intentions, Viktor became less wary of allowing Jayce access to his materials and facilities. By this point Jayce had, essentially, been granted full access to all parts of the lab. Unfortunately Jayce had no immediate plans for the day. Without Viktor present, it was difficult to continue working on the Arcane research, and Jayce had yet to finalize a build design from any of the blueprints he had been researching. Lacking any direction, he decided to investigate the lab's inventory more carefully. Up until now he had hesitated to provoke Viktor by appearing nosy, but if he knew what was on hand it could better inform the direction of his research. It was while he was cautiously sorting through the contents of a storeroom that he made his discovery. At first it simply seemed like a pile of scrap metal. Jayce wasn't sure why it was being kept — was Viktor planning on melting it down perhaps? The metal was certainly high grade material; Jayce was curious where it had come from. All of it seemed to be damaged in some way… It was when he began to examine the individual pieces more closely that Jayce felt his heart begin to sink. He recognized the metal he held in his hands. It had come from one of Viktor's armored suits — the breastplate, if he wasn't mistaken. His hands tightened around the metal, not registering the sharp edges as he stared blindly at the large dent that had caved in the chest, courtesy of a solid blow from the Mercury Hammer. This was the cost of his ambition… a constant war with the man he had once called his best friend. The only man who had ever really seen him, known him… who had matched him like a perfectly-tuned gear, always in sync. And he had tossed that aside, in favor of public recognition and influence. Had it ever been worth it? He pictured in his mind the early days of Hextech, when he had been so eager to make his name and secure his position. I thought I wanted this… the fame, the attention. In those days he had been willing to go to any lengths to secure what he wanted. And what had that gotten him? Shallow attention from people who didn't know him, and a Council that seemed to vie with each other to see who could blatantly exploit him the most. I was convinced my way was the 'correct' way. Viktor had tried to get through to him more than once. True, not all of his proposals were something Jayce felt comfortable with. But in the past, they had always been able to talk, to reason with each other. When had that stopped? When did their differences become so insurmountable? Jayce recalled his arrival here, when Viktor had carefully suggested that perhaps amputation would be the safest response. Jayce had been so quick to refuse, but… had it been because he genuinely believed they could find the cause of all this? Or was he so accustomed to being at odds with Viktor that he had simply dismissed the suggestion out of hand? Always so quick to assume the worst. any time Viktor showed himself. Jayce sorted through the pile of metal. Now that he looked closer he could see the clear signs of their constant struggle; not a single piece was undamaged. Clear signs of heavy impacts, energy blasts… Jayce felt his stomach turn as he realized that some pieces even carried the rusty discoloration of old bloodstains. How many of these fights could have been avoided if Jayce had been more willing to listen? 'Defender of Tomorrow'. Huh, what a joke. All I defended was Piltover's vision of the future. About to return everything to its original place, Jayce paused when he spotted another piece that stood out, newer and shinier than the rest. Picking it up and turning it over he felt the blood drain from his face. Large gashes tore through the gauntlet he held — gashes not caused by modern weapons but by tooth and claw, clear signs of the Hexhound's aggression. Stumbling backwards against the wall he slid to the ground, hiding his face in his hands. A sob tore through his frame as he recalled Viktor's care on the night he arrived. Why?!? his brain screamed. Why would you do this when all I do… Through his tears Jayce looked again at the pile of damaged armor, resting on the ground in silent accusation. "All I do is hurt you…"

Viktor is no stranger to unusual sights. His work with Hextech, his work in Zaun… these have exposed him to numerous things both grotesque and outlandish. He has performed surgery. He has seen magic warp reality. Even with his experience, he is taken aback by what he finds during Jayce's examination. With absolutely no precedent for what could cause such a full-body transformation, a physical exam was a necessary first step. Viktor was well aware that Jayce had suffered damage from their last altercation. The detonation of a Hex crystal was not something to be taken lightly, and Jayce's attempt to shield himself meant that his arms had taken the brunt of the damage. This though… Viktor is stunned by the damage. As Piltover's Defender of Tomorrow, Jayce should be receiving the best medical care available. The Council and Clans would hardly be pleased if their Golden Boy is not the shining figurehead they so frequently parade before the masses. And yet his arms… looking at them, the only word Viktor can summon to describe them is ravaged. There are thick scars winding up Jayce's arms, starting from his wrist and winding past his elbow. Their appearance speaks of wounds that were not tended to well or frequently, something that puzzles Viktor greatly. Did no one attend to the Defender after their last battle? Jayce was carried from the site, almost unconscious. Why would his body appear so neglected? Viktor leans closer, ignoring the familiar and expected arcane residue that naturally results from constant use of Hextech. There are patterns buried under the scarring… it almost appears to be shimmer poisoning. Were Jayce's wounds corrupted during the battle? He is hardly someone that Viktor would expect to carry the marks of shimmer usage. Additionally, his eyes show no signs of change — the sclera are still a pure white, no darkening to be seen. Viktor runs his flesh hand down Jayce's forearm, not seeing the slight shudder this provokes. On closer inspection, he can also make out faint signs of energy burns, as if Jayce has been in the midst of a recent discharge or explosion. "What happened, Defender?" He meets Jayce's eyes, expecting them to be scrutinizing his every move, but to his surprise Jayce's eyes are unfocused, his gaze turned inward. "Carelessness…" he mutters, sounding oddly pensive. Viktor narrows his eyes in consideration. This does not sound like the man he knew. "You are reckless, Defender, but not careless." He scrutinizes Jayce's face, noting his hunched shoulders and refusal to make eye contact. "Did you do this on purpose?" Surely it cannot be that. Surely Jayce would never… He feels a strange twist in his chest when Jayce remains quiet, his eyes glancing away nervously. Eventually, a quiet "…not necessarily…" is heard — far too quiet for Viktor's liking. In clinical terms, Jayce describes the experiment that led to the destruction inside his lab. Viktor listens to his account of the experiment and its resulting failure with growing alarm, grateful that his mask prevents his face from revealing any hint of reaction. Experimenting with a fractured crystal — what could have prompted such rash behavior? He quietly resolves to coax Jayce into revealing more after he has finished the exam. His chance arrives later that day, as he examines his analysis of Piltover's actions and likely retaliations following their previous clash. He has given careful thought to what could have pushed Jayce to such disregard for his own reputation, possibly even his life. Despite their previous arguments, he knows Jayce does not wish for war. Although Viktor has always found his title and theatrics tiresome and pretentious, his name is aptly chosen — he is a defender, not an aggressor. It takes very little to lead Jayce into the conversation. Speaking his thoughts aloud draws Jayce to the board, offering his own insights into the thoughts behind certain decisions. Jayce's shoulders slump."The pressure is… I know I have no right to complain. It's nothing to what you've endured, because of me." The exhaustion in his voice is enough to renew Viktor's concern. Looking closely, he realizes that Jayce's eyes have once again focused inward. "But their demands… I don't know if I can keep up anymore." For a moment Jayce closes his eyes, his voice lowering to a whisper. "Sometimes I wish we never created Hextech." Out of everything Viktor has seen and heard from Jayce, It is these words that alarm him the most. Since before they even met, Jayce has been focused on Hextech to the exclusion of all else. Even at his lowest, he was never anything less than devoted to his dream. What could possibly have shaken him so badly? Looking back over his notes and observations, he tries to imagine Jayce, stuck in the middle of all the fervor. Any rise in tension has always led to those in power scrambling for more power in the name of 'protection', and Hextech has long been the most powerful force available. This is why Jayce has been so careful to guard its secrets; far from the greed that most of Piltover assumes, Viktor knows it is caution that guides Jayce, always aware of the immense power he is responsible for. If the sudden buildup of tension has been this evident here, how much harder has it been for Jayce, trapped in the center of their web by a gilded cage formed of society's judgment? Viktor can only imagine how draining it must have been, the constant threats and intimidation from an upper class that has always been far too eager to turn on it's brightest star at the slightest provocation. No matter their past, he cannot let Jayce continue to sink into despair. Carefully Viktor reaches out to rest his arm along Jayce's, hoping to pull him back with the warmth of living touch. He waits for Jayce to meet his eyes, trying to hold his ex-partner's spirit together through sheer force of will. "We… can still do good… Defender."

It's the bed that finally undoes Jayce. His memories of the journey into Zaun are hazy, at best. Try as he might, he can't quite remember the full events that landed him in this predicament. Just a sensation of wild, tearing pain, and an overwhelming panic that forced him to run without pause, until a thread of reason reasserted itself. Hurtling across the bridges, driven by desperate hope that his ex-partner could help him. Finding Viktor, struggling to force words past a mouth that was never designed for human speech, and then… His mind went blank after that, the trail of memory engulfed in a red fog of anger and frenzied pain. That fog only parts at the point Jayce awoke, sprawled naked on the ground with Viktor leaning over him, staring at him with eyes filled with disbelief and… and something more. Dimly he registered the feeling of hands assessing him for injury, before he was hauled bodily to his feet, an arm around his waist keeping him upright. Being turned and guided back up the alley, hearing Viktor muttering about stubborn Pilties with more muscles than brains as he carefully supports Jayce's weight. It takes an inordinate amount of time to reach Viktor's workshop, and despite his best efforts Jayce is barely able to keep his feet by the time they enter, stumbling in a haze of exhaustion and pain. He feels as if every muscle in his body has been torn apart and then reassembled. He expects Viktor to immediately begin tossing questions at him, but to his surprise he is guided through the lab and into what looks to be living quarters, modest and yet serviceable. Seemingly before he can blink, he finds himself standing in front of the bed. "Take my bed, Defender. I do not need sleep anymore." Viktor turns and strides off before Jayce can even consider a response, leaving him to eye the rumpled mass of blankets and pillows skeptically. You say that, but this looks… lived in. However, this is where Viktor wants him, and as much as he wants to protest he knows he can't chase after Viktor under his own power. He has no choice but to accept, so carefully he drags his weary body into the bed and settles down under the blankets. The warmth of the bedding is an instant relief. The heady scent of leather and metal envelops him, reminding him of days spent in the forge, and a hint of anise calls to mind days spent comparing notes over cups of sweet milk and coffee. It smells like him. In a haze he turns to nuzzle into the pillows, unaware of the tear that slips down his cheek. I've missed this… missed him. His heart aches with the thought, but his mind is unable to hold onto it as he finally slips into sleep, unaware of amber eyes observing him from a distance. His dreams are fractured and restless. Ripples of Arcane power, the sensation of falling and being torn apart and put back together only to fall again. Running on two legs, then four legs… feeling his mouth twist in a snarl and realizing that he is baring his teeth in a canine snout, prepared to snap at any threat that manifests. And everywhere around him, he can feel Viktor's presence, somehow everywhere at once but unable to be seen. The rumble of the Machine Herald's voice washes over him, drowning out the scream of the Arcane. Eventually Jayce is forced into consciousness by the pain, despite his mind screaming for more rest. Blearily his eyes sweep across the lab, before landing on the couch that separates the lab from the rest of the open floor plan's rooms. Even in the dim lighting, he can make out the form of the Machine Herald, slumped over against the couch's arm. For a brief moment Jayce wonders if he's being stared at, before he realizes that Viktor is asleep. Viktor gave me his bed. The warmth of that glows like an ember in Jayce's heart. He had run to Viktor in sheer desperation, but a small part of him had wondered if Vik would even care. But he brought Jayce into his home, made him comfortable, even stayed with him through the night. Jayce feels some of his panic easing in the face of Viktor's care. I'm not alone. We can figure this out. He keeps his gaze on the figure of his old partner, the reassurance of his presence enough to quiet Jayce's fears and allow him to sleep once more. There was never anything we couldn't figure out together…

It was incredible, Jayce thought to himself. The things the heart could remember. The things the mind could forget. During the first week of his stay in Emberflit, his condition was wildly unstable. The transformation could spark with what seemed like almost no warning, and did so often. Jayce found he had very little control over his circumstances, forced to endure whatever whims the Arcane flux held to. As a result he was often disoriented and lethargic, struggling to regain mentally and physically from the toll on his body. The latest change had left him slumped over on the floor, shivering and miserable. The effort of attempting to stand felt insurmountable. It felt as though all his muscles would lock up with the slightest provocation, and his senses were still reeling from the assault. His mind was so sluggish that it took a moment for Jayce to realize that Viktor had crossed the room and was standing behind him. "If you're going to fall asleep on the floor, take this." Jayce was still working to process Viktor's words when a warm weight fell over him. A blanket. Rather than force Jayce to move, or ignore him altogether, the emotionless Machine Herald had just brought a blanket to wrap around him, Jayce could feel his shaking beginning to ease, tipping sideways to snuggle into the warm folds draped over him. Mmm… it smells nice…so comforting… his mind whispered. There was a haunting feeling of nostalgia, of fighting to grasp a fading memory, before he lost his grasp on consciousness and the world faded away. Jayce found himself repeating this experience many times. Although the events of his transformations could vary, it was not uncommon to find himself sitting on the floor during his recovery, shaking as his body and mind fought against the tearing effects of the Arcane. Despite the research and efforts at control, it continued to take a toll on him, and he would wake to find himself curled up under the weight of his blanket. It never failed to soothe him, wrapped in a heavy warmth that carried the scent of his partner. It was becoming a familiar, an anticipated sensation. So when he found himself draped over the books and papers in front of him, eyes closed but hanging onto consciousness by the merest thread, the sensation of a heavy warmth being carefully wrapped around his shoulders was enough to have his mouth curling in a gentle smile. Vik, his mind whispered. My partner… Again he felt that fleeting recognition, that sense of familiarity, but even as he fought to hold onto it his mind was losing the battle against sleep. The soft brush of a hand over his head was enough to convince his body to surrender. When he next opened his eyes, still drowsy but beginning to shake off sleep for awareness, it took a moment to recall where he was. The feeling of books and papers under his head was so familiar, a sense memory that had been ingrained over years of habit. For a brief moment he could almost believe that he was still in the Academy Lab, waking up after staying all night to research theories with his partner, until inevitably one would lose the fight against sleep, only to wake huddled on the table and covered with… Jayce froze, feeling as if he had been struck with his own hammer. The blanket. How could you forget? his mind whispered. He had fallen asleep in the lab more times than he could count. Always, he would wake to find that Viktor had covered him with a blanket and left him to sleep… the same blanket that was now wrapped around his shoulders. In the turmoil and pain that followed their separation, Jayce had forced himself to forget as much as he could of their time together. He had blotted out the memory — with work, with alcohol, with meaningless social obligations. But his heart remembered… the comfort, the warmth. It was always him. Viktor. You're still here. My partner…

There are times when Viktor is almost convinced he did Jayce more harm than good, pushing him to control the Arcane flux. In the absence of any progress regarding identifying the cause of the spreading corruption, Viktor had originally concluded that the next best course of action would be for Jayce to gain control of the transformation itself. Certainly it seemed a logical step at first. (Viktor insisted to himself that he had no personal motives for his desire to have Jayce remain in control of his form, regardless of any… emotional surges taking place.) The sight of Jayce enduring the aftereffects of his most recent battle with the Arcane is greatly challenging that resolve. He had promptly carried his partner out of the lab and gently placed him in bed to rest, but seeing him as he was now - naked and shaking, with eyes glazed over in pain and fatigue - left a tearing sensation in his chest. It was so like the early days in the lab, when the constant demands and stress would reach into Jayce's head and twist his confidence to despair, leaving him desperate for comfort and reassurance. Viktor is no less weak to Jayce's pleading face now as he was then. Carefully he removes his armor, his bodysuit, and after a brief hesitation, his mask. Then he crawls into the bed, gathering Jayce close. The chillness of Jayce's skin prompts Viktor to raise the internal temperature of his own prosthetics, sending heat radiating into the space between them. Drawn by the warmth and the comfort of bare skin, Jayce presses as close as he can, wrapping his legs around Viktor's and tucking his head into Viktor's neck. Before long Viktor can feel the tension draining from his frame. For long moments there is only silence. Viktor cradles Jayce to himself as his shaking slowly eases — becoming small tremors, settling into a still tenseness, then gradually fading into a heavy relaxation. He has almost concluded that Jayce has fallen asleep, but after a moment he feels the sensation of lips moving against his neck, and his partner's weary voice breaks the stillness. "I've missed this, V. Just, holding you. When you were cold, or in pain, or when we stayed too late in the lab." "Mmm…" Viktor murmurs. He fights to keep his voice level, to avoid betraying the fact that he also thinks of those days. Times spent curled up on the lab's couch, trying to let the feel of his partner's arms distract him from the pain of his body. When his partner's touch had meant safety, and comfort, and trust. A time before Hextech, and augmentation, and constant conflict. "…although, you fit in my arms back then. I almost miss it…" The wistfulness in Jayce's voice is threatening Viktor's control. "That was a long time ago, Jayce." It has been many years since those days. Years since they could be considered friends, partners. They have both changed, in ways both visible and not. Jayce's voice is beginning to betray his exhaustion, his words coming slower and fainter. "Sometimes I wish we could go back. Try again." His arms tighten around Viktor, almost as if he fears his words will send Viktor fleeing from the bed. "But for what it's worth, V, I'm glad you're no longer cold, or in pain." "…" Viktor feels as if Jayce's words are tearing at his soul. How often has he railed at Jayce in his thoughts, believing that his partner cared nothing for his struggles and pain? He thought that Jayce had forgotten their bond, had cast him out of his life. Now the fear and fatigue are bringing up truths that Viktor never dreamed he would hear. Desperately he forces his voice to work as he wraps his arms more securely around his partner, the slide of bare skin threatening to undo him. "Go to sleep, Jayce." Eventually he feels Jayce's limbs grow lax as he slips into unconsciousness. He tightens his own grip in response, hiding his face in Jayce's neck just as Jayce has in his own. He is a fool, an absolute fool. How could he ever have thought any amount of suppressors would be enough to purge this man from his heart? How will I survive when you turn and walk away?

The apparent voice of his ex-partner coming from the hound is enough to freeze Viktor with indecision. It's a brief lapse, but a costly one. Between one moment and the next, the hound straightens from it's crouched posture and leaps - not for his chest or throat, Viktor quickly realizes, but for the Hexclaw behind him. It's going for the Hexclaw? Viktor is taken aback; most animals would immediately move for what they perceive as a killing blow. The Hexclaw, as a foreign construct, shouldn't register as a serious threat. It knows..? Before Viktor can do much more than jerk his head back in startled reaction, the hound has clamped the Hexclaw in its jaws and wrenched it apart. Viktor swears internally as he realizes he has lost his primary offensive weapon. A small part of his brain is still stuck on the thought that this animal should not recognize his claw as the primary threat… but there is someone who would. Someone who always begins fights by attempting to disarm his primary weapon. Someone whose voice has been heard once already… He cannot dismiss the thought. Again and again the hound leaps for him; its movements have become wild and chaotic, as if some illness is forcing it into a frenzy. Viktor does his best to evade, but he cannot force himself to raise his hand for a killing blow. His hesitation is costing him dearly; already his armor is rent in several places. None of his retaliatory blows have had any noticeable effect. The damage is becoming critical; he cannot allow this fight to continue for much longer. He is reluctantly preparing to begin attacking in earnest when he becomes aware that the hound seems to be faltering. Tremors are beginning to wrack its frame, and without warning it stumbles and collapses mid-leap. Viktor pauses for a moment, wary of a sudden revival, but the hound appears to be well and truly down. Viktor allows himself a single moment of stillness before he begins to take stock of his condition. His armor has taken serious damage, plus the Hexclaw is completely nonfunctional. There is no way he can visit Piltover in this condition, his investigation of Jayce's lab and the rumored uproar will have to wait. And there's still the matter of what to do with the hound… As if summoned by his thoughts, Viktor becomes aware of a massive Arcane flux forming around the animal. It is as if the magic is warping the very air, forming into an anomaly that engulfs the hound before Viktor can even consider a course of action. Strangely it seems to settle as quickly as it appears, fading away to reveal… "V… Vik?" Viktor feels as though he has been rooted to the ground. Even after being addressed by the hound, he was not expecting it to actually be true. But he cannot deny the reality of the man lying in front of him, reaching out for Viktor even as his eyes slip shut in unconsciousness. A figure he has not seen for years, save for across a battlefield. Jayce?!?
