The coding tasks are performed between 2x and 10x faster on the extreme depending on complexity when done this way (not out of the box - technique needs to be developed to consistently achieve such gains). This is still a HUGE productivity gain. I don't consider the odd YouTube video "dark leisure".

I've landed on the following limit for concurrent work: working on one major coding task and on one minor coding task while also doing one of the following: writing (emails, specs, documentation, Slack messages) OR in-person meetings OR watching YouTube (or similar leisurely task).

Further, my mind cannot follow in the speed and breadth that Claude Code can achieve - and figuring out that limit is an important part of learning how to use these tools effectively. I tried working on four tasks at once (because it's physically possible), and I felt pretty unwell after hours.

I cannot speak to how this applies to "contracting" and "consulting" space because I generally work full-time, but from my perspective, calling it "dark leisure" implies that "coding keystrokes"="productivity", which is too narrow a view.

@emollick.bsky.social has a really good article for why even non-coders should be paying attention to Claude Code.

It's about *learning* how to use it effectively to get as much benefit while staying clear of the pitfalls. It's a journey, and it *feels like* (I cannot say anything firmer at this point) Claude itself wouldn't be able to embark on that journey. I *still* feel like an adult at the keyboard...

20-year programmer here. I use Claude Code every day and it's about 10x better at programming than me. I'm dramatically more productive, but it's made me feel like a child and if I could Thanos-snap it out of existence I'd do it in a heartbeat.
