Slow Horses, Department Q and City of Shadows prove that the formula of a troubled policeman getting a difficult ad hoc assignment is a winner

I just watched again Dr Strangelove. It makes you worry less about AI and more about how the intelligence of the people in charge has been getting weaker since the movie was made

In a flight back to DC, I picked The Ballad of Wallis Island expecting an easy going film, and it turned out to be a great movie

Reading The Melancholy of Resistance, Lazlo #Krazsnahorkai creates an atmosphere and doesn’t want the reader to take a breath, so that the reader shares the characters’ feeling of oppression

I’m back! I watched A Poet, a Colombian movie that manages humor in the framework of a nuanced social narrative in a pleasant and entertaining way

The brutalist, ambitious movie where things happen in one way, but could have happened in a different way, such is the lack of tension throughout a long film with nice cinematography and some good moments

Emilia Pérez is fun to watch, despite dealing with a tough subject. Music makes sense when it comes. Aware of Spanish-language difficulties, but I did not find it distracting.

Christopher Nolan is already one of my favorite directors, and with The Prestige, which I finally watched, he confirmed his versatility. Very different from my favorite movie of his, Inception, but great acting and brilliantly managed twist and turns

All the meaning of the phrase apply to A Real Pain, a well-crafted movie with great acting by Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eidlssenberg, where the key aspects of the story are what you don’t see

I just read Khalil, a novel narrated from the point of view of a terrorist. The author shows great capacity to manage very different characters within the plot, with a surprising but credible psychological evolution for the main character. Great book by the Algerian Yasmina Khadra (pseudonym)

Finished watching Six Feet Under. Dysfunctional family with the duty to help others grieve while being unable to handle grief themselves for years. Fourth season is weaker, but the others are well done. Worthwhile
