Pre- Everything Everything pub chat: what would the bible have to say about jazz?

Dispiriting Sainsbury’s Christmas playlist has just been perked up by the appearance of ‘Sound and Vision’, so we can only assume an algorithm somewhere has taken ‘waiting for the gift’ a bit too literally.

Saw the German electro pop band SPARKLING last night in what surely is a much smaller venue than they’ll play next time they’re in London when everyone will want to join in the fun. The algorithm that decided I might want to hear them after I had a Digitalism afternoon did its work right.

My feet seem to have entered some netherworld between sizes, where nothing in the shop can venture.

Arigato Tokyo, it’s been incredible and definitely won’t be so long before I’m back.

No ready for the downer of returning home just yet so let’s start the way back with a few days in Taiwan.

Brit-in-Japan cliche incoming:

Thought I’d racked up an enormous bill on my first ever visit to a kaiten sushi bar. I’ve barely gone over a tenner.

Izakaya Fuwatoro in Osaka has a chaotic aura and food totally worth it. It’s like being inside Japanese TV with like four things going on at once. And a rubber chicken hanging from the ceiling.

My travel companion’s just got them to put Memory Tapes on in an Osaka record store and right now I’m a very happy person.

Holy shit I appear to be in Japan.

Truly this is a spell of good content.

Wait there’s a new Prolapse record too?
September 7, 2025 at 10:28 AM
Also given some of the new Cut Copy album a go and that’s also as dependably good as always. A good day for new records all round.

Just finished the final Saint Etienne album, International, and it’s suitably wonderful. It’s going to be strange without them in the landscape, they’ve always just been dependably there.

Once or twice a year I steward at a graduation ceremony and it’s probably the biggest concentration of happy people in one room I see at any time.

Wonder what the odds are on Sinner and Alcaraz both getting to 20+ majors. They’re easily good enough. #Wimbledon

Vale for another year, #Wimbledon. No other sports event comes close.
July 13, 2025 at 7:03 PM
It would be most remiss to watch what could be a very long #wimbledon final splayed out on the bed so I’ve decided to make pies. In this weather. In a room that faces the sun at this time of day.

My life choices aren’t always optimal.

When Kipling wrote “if you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same” he didn’t take giving an interview after being on the end of a 6-0 6-0 scoreline in the #Wimbledon final into account.

Absolute demolition job. Swiatek barely made a mistake the whole way through. Anisimova’s still on the way back, she’ll be fine in the long term. #wimbledon

Today’s march at #prideinlondon felt more important as a protest than in the last few years, with the precarious nature of lgbtq+ rights round this way at present; me and the work colleagues were there for each other, and everyone who couldn’t be there.

Came to Copenhagen to see Mew’s final hometown show tonight (was meant to be their final final show but they’re playing all over until the end of the year now. I don’t get emotional at much but Jonas just keeping it together during Comforting Sounds completely set me off.

Time for the semi-regular fun of working out who exactly shows the tennis these days.

There’s a greater than zero chance that my attempt to handle the clocks going forward by agreeing to do a quiz at midday might backfire horribly, and I’ll fall asleep on Zoom in front of everyone.
