I'm an 80s kid, an Osage, a left-winger, a dog lover, a senior programmer, recently an educational assistant, an amateur baker, reader of fantasy and sci-fi, movie addict (mostly older releases), and sundry other things. I live in Eugene, Oregon. He/him.
My annual Christmas baking spree. Got a super late start this year, and was rushing in the 3 days before Christmas. Alt text has the details on each cookie type; replies contain more photos. Not pictured: peanut brittle, pecan pie, and peanut butter pie.

My knee-jerk reaction was that it felt weird and somehow wrong. But upon reflection, I can see some advantages. It could perhaps be a little freer on runtime. Probably fewer "Look at OUR shows" ads (though maybe more annoying other ads). Maybe even the ability to come in late & watch from the start?

Like many others, I grew up watching Rob Reiner as "Meathead" in "All in the Family" reruns, and rewatching "Princess Bride" and "Spinal Tap" endlessly. He was a genius. But reading Cary Elwes' PB memoir, what struck me most was Reiner's kindness. May his and Michelle's memories be a blessing.

Well, one month later, here we are. Did I manage to post each day? No. I could blame this devil of a cold or sundry other things, but the simplest truth is probably that my reach exceeded my grasp. Research and writing take time, and thus preparation, which I didn't do. But I think I still did OK.
Today is November 1, the first day of Native American Heritage Month. Each day I am going to try to highlight a famous or historically significant Native American and give a brief bio. But I'd like to say a few words on why I'm doing this first. 🧵

My favorite "Christian" Christmas song is "We Three Kings", with all verses sung, though "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" comes in close. My favorite "Secular" Christmas song is "32 Feet and 8 Little Tails" by Gene Autry.
What is your favorite "Christian" Christmas song and what is your favorite "Secular" Christmas song?

My favorite Christian Christmas song is "It Came Upon A Midnight Clear", and my favorite secular Christmas song isn't actually a Christmas song (see comment)...

Happy Exploding Whale Day to all who celebrate.
opb.org OPB @opb.org · Nov 12
On this day 55 years ago, blubber went boom at the Oregon Coast.

That's when officials made the legendary decision to blow up a dead whale.

Here's a look back at the explosive piece of Oregon lore with a 2020 story by OPB's Tiffany Camhi written ahead of the whale of a tale's 50th anniversary.
‘It was like a blubber snowstorm’: Why Oregon blew up a whale in 1970
The exploding whale is a piece of Oregon lore that just won’t go away. It’s one of those real-life stories that just sounds too strange to be real.

Most of these are from the week before; this hasn't really been a movie-watching week for me. Resident Evil is increasingly ridiculous but still kind of fun. Hellboy's aesthetic was great; a little polish on the plot could have elevated it significantly.

Happy Halloween! Got somewhere between 25-30 trick-or-treaters this year, which is maybe just a bit higher than normal for this neighborhood. Even had one group of 9 kids; not sure if they all started out together or if there was just a trick-or-treat traffic jam at my house.

I wasn't planning on buying any new Halloween deco this year, especially not this late in the season, but this guy was totally worth the $4.
