Until your post, I also haven’t seen very much written about this, and no media arts converge (unless I’ve skipped something and someone has some links to share?).

And the Hugo Berge fund, 400+ applicants for grants of £5K– 5 will be successful. Unsustainable odds, and the over-subscription is more evidence of the crisis. There is almost no trickle down, with the important exception of supporting work from other cultures.

As Alec said, very few organisations have closed - and that’s brilliant. But many are now running on air, and that leaves very little resources to fund freelancers to actually make work. Meanwhile, the CS individuals fund is wildly oversubscribed. So what next? What do freelancers do?

In theatre, there are some brilliant new plays due to premiere. But alongside that is a lot of programming that doesn’t draw from the Scotland-based freelance pool: remounted plays (no commissioned playwrights), ADs directing in house (no hired directors), imported productions (no actors cast).

What happens to the next generation of artists? And the absence of paid work and opportunities will always, always reinforce class / income boundaries in favour of those who can work for free.

It’s been an absolutely vital part of my screen career, and I’ve learned endless amounts in my time working on the show. I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible institution. Please keep supporting the show, it really is a vital part of the Scottish screen sector ❤️

As everyone knows, the show was dealt a devastating blow with the announcement that it’s being cancelled after a final series. It’s an incredible training ground for new talent, particularly working class voices who can struggle to find a way into the (predominantly middle class) screen industries.
