Of all those who fell on the battlefield that day, Ragna deserved Valhalla the least. She had lived her entire short life in a small, sun-blessed village, dreaming of the battles her grandparents had told her about while she sat at their feet, cleaning fish, plucking poultry, or simply daydreaming lazily in the sunlight. She was a hunter — fast, agile, precise. She was a friend — loyal, caring, reliable. She was love — unrequited, painless, fleeting; the kind that makes you realise that true love is yet to come. She was the only daughter. She was the eldest granddaughter. She was someone to everyone and no one to herself. It seemed to her that she was destined for distant lands, bloody battles, riches and conquests. It seemed to her that she was destined to be someone greater than the sum of the roles assigned to her. That if she ran long enough, she would eventually find herself. And then she would no longer feel so empty and alone. Dying, she did not think about how absurd it was that she had been killed by an arrow that was not meant for her. She did not think about how no one at home had probably realised yet that she had run away. She pleaded desperately with all the gods to grant her one more dawn, scarlet and cold, smelling of salt and wind, like a lock of someone's hair in which her face was drowning. Clinging to someone's cold shoulders with her weakening fingers, she begged for one more chance. But no one heard her whisper above the thunder of battle. The stranger's scarlet hair covered her, lulling her to sleep. The stranger's shoulders let her under their skin, sharing the pitiful remnants of warmth with her. Dying was scary. But not lonely. And then — she opened her eyes. She was surrounded by forest. She didn't remember what should have been there instead, but she had expected something else. Smooth, cool stones were beneath her feet. A warm wind tangled in her hair. There was a dizzyingly sweet smell in the air. In the distance, between the trees, she glimpsed a human figure. She didn't know who it was, but the distance between them felt wrong. Ragna walked ran rushed like the wind after the disappearing flaming locks, because now that was all she knew.
