We see that many research institutions and universities are present in social media spaces, but they use it more like a bulletin board. We encourage them to take advantage of these tools to share their knowledge and form closer relationships with the public!

In a time of growing distrust in science, social media can bring scientists and institutions into spaces where everyone else is already at. Because “building a bridge” as they say in academic spaces, isn’t quite enough.

Among other things, we discussed with the class how social media allows for the unique opportunity to foster a two-way conversation with the public when it comes to the dissemination of knowledge.

Of course, this is a simplified version. The fact of the matter is, just posting an hour long video or podcast, or a journal article- isn't going to be engaged with by people that aren't already engaging. We must revisit the purpose of our #sciencecommunication - who are we trying to reach and why?

But people won’t commit to watching or listening to longform unless it’s from someone they trust. Which is why phase 1 is crucial. Instead of one or the other, both become the formula for successful information dissemination.

It is true that short form content reaches more people, and is essential to gaining an audience, but long form content is becoming more popular!

We are making it our mission to supply every researcher with the tools they need for effective information dissemination, and we believe this is needed now more than ever.

We believe an important aspect of science communication is showing the process, not just the results. People need to know what's in the making, what's going on, and the context behind the headlines and discoveries.

Overall it requires spending many hours on social media, observing and engaging other users. You may not want to spend hours on social media, and that is totally understandable.
