Safdie brothers UNCUT GEMS and GOOD TIME are probably one of the best examples on how to achieve this in contemporary filmmaking. Both grip you and drag you through the whole experience in such a visceral way.

great video essay. i really like the mention of "qualia", a term that surrounds me for a while now and i cant stress its importance enough. There are so many subconscious layers to an image that create this subjective experience of realism.
