Imminent Defenestrations
My friend got me a book for Xmas so naturally I’m trying to read it right away.

He was very excited to share it, because it had been one of his favourites.

It has … not been an easy read so far.

100 pages in and DNF is staring me in the face. 💙📚
The book in question…?

And we close out the reading year with the Odyssey. Fagles translation.

It vibes quite a bit differently than the Iliad. It’s telling a different story so that makes sense. It’s rolling along. Parts are good. Parts indifferent. Ans then you meet Argos.

Best boy. 😭 5⭐️

An incredible work. The best I’ve ever read at capturing an age and a time that are both so hauntingly familiar but also alien as a code of social decorum runs headlong towards the horizon of modern warfare. 💙📚

All Systems Red - sort of a throwback sci fi story. Its brevity is enjoyable. Short and punchy. I think I’m on board for the series. 4 ⭐️ 💙📚

I had never seen this quote before today.
So, I’m not saying I disagree but if I gave you a book as a present this year I was … unaware of any implications … 📚💙

At times beautiful and sometimes Impenetrable, this book definitely leaves an impression.

Perhaps the most difficult book I’ve read this year, it has short stories that I loved and short asides that left me scratching my head. 4⭐️📚💙

Dan Jones has become a must read historian. He tells great stories, filling in the white space between the lines. I loved this. 4⭐️

À fine pastiche of sci fi elements from à number of other sci fi realms artfully seen together. Better than the first book, but still a slow read, the series feels like it is finally poised to really payoff the buildup. 4⭐️

The Rehearsal is the most incredible show I’ve ever seen.

I don’t even know how to categorize or explain it.

What should I do?

Dive immediately into another McCarthy?

Or

Savour him. Leave the next one till next Christmas?

I kind of want to be like Desmond from Lost with his last remaining Dickens …

And my 6th McCarthy novel - reinforcing him firmly as one of my favourite authors of all time.

Ambitious and far reaching, this is a series that has set a lofty goal. Not the least because of the clear influence from sci fi giants like Dune and thé Book of the New Sun.💙📚🪐

Book 25 of 2025 for me - Era of Ruin.
The final FINAL (no, really this time!) book in the Horus Heresy/ Siege of Terra.

It’s nice. It lets some of the authors return to characters and stories and give them some of the wrap ups they deserve. Enjoyable. 4⭐️

The Poppy War #1 - R.F.Kuang.
OOOoof.
That was rough. This was the closest I've come to a DNF this year.

I have heard this recommended many times from a number of booktube & #booksky sources. Please know I will be judging you based on this going forward. ;)
