#birding has slowed a bit in #LosAngeles, but noticed a newcomer to the neighborhood today when a pair of Western Flycatchers (Empidonax difficilis) perched across from the local church. Not usually in this area, so an exciting find! 🪶

Was going through some old photos and found an interesting pair of a Canada Goose (Branta canadensis) sleeping. This shows their eyespots which help protect from predators, cool little example of their adaptations! also HONK HONK HONK 🪶

As if parking in #LosAngeles wasn't hard enough, this meter was guarded by a Brown Widow (Latrodectus geometricus)! Obvs I decided I didn't need to park here that badly and let her live her best meter maid life. 🕷️⌛👮‍♀️

Also is that a dead male with her?

Little one perched right in front of me on a walk. Not 100% on the ID of a juvenile Anna's Hummingbird, maybe Allen's? A fun moment regardless! 🪶

Tried to sneak up to this Great Egret (Ardea alba) at the #LARiver in #LosAngeles but scared them off. Likely a good thing they are wary of strange humans skulking towards them 😂 - Still, it led to this pic of them on the wing, which is a victory! 🪶

The Scaly-breasted Munia (Lonchura punctulata) isn't local to #LosAngeles, but feral populations have thrived since the 80s. Native to southern Asia, and likely introduced as pets, it's nice to see some in the wild! 🪶

Spring is truly magic in #EchoPark! Weeks ago a Green Heron (Butorides virescens) built their nest in view, and on a return visit I was rewarded by seeing the 3 nestlings enjoying a perch. Looking healthy and well cared for by their hard working parent! 🪶

A brave Western Fence Lizard (Sceloporus occidentalis) basks in the California sun showing the blue and green iridescence of their scales. Didn't mind me getting close enough for this close shot on a spring afternoon hike!

Sitting in the grass I found this friend crawling on my foot, after shaking them off and def not shrieking at all, I learned they were just living up to their name as a 'Daring Jumping Spider' (Phidippus audax)! They don't spin webs, but hide and hunt, very daring indeed! 🕷

A temporary resident for #LosAngeles, this Ash-throated Flycatcher (Myiarchus cinerascens) spends their spring breeding season along Elysian Park's Frogtown trail! Great morning walk for freeway and birding views! Lots of Vaux's Swifts (Chaetura vauxi) today too! 🪶

Been trying to get a hummingbird shot for what feels like forever. Finally got one, let's just not talk about how many blurry shots it took! Beautiful Anna's at the Hummingbird Garden in Kenneth Hahn Park in LA 🪶

Wading birds out in full force at the #losangeles river today! Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, and Snowy Egret all wading together in the gently flowing waters of the distinctly urban nature scene. Such incredible survivalists! 🪶

The sounds of #protest echoed off the towering walls of the old theaters in #dtla. The chant "No Tr**p, No KKK, No Fascist USA" brought people to their windows to see US and many peoples' flags represented in the crowd. #losangeles came out again for #fiftyfiftyone's Not My President's Day.

I thought I had seen the full array of species in my #losangeles neighborhood, but this Say's Phoebe paid a visit to serve as a symbol of staying mindful and keeping watch for the simple, unexpected beauty life can offer in unexpected places. 🪶

Watched the #LAFD extinguish and cut open a smouldering vehicle in a shower of sparks, yet somehow the quiet strength of this image best captured the moment. The big fires are out of the news but they're still here. red and blue under a false yellow moon.
