Ben Roden died on October 22, 1978. Afterward, Lois Roden had enough support to be recognized as president. She used her new station to aggressively proclaim that, in the eyes of God, women were equal to men, and she was particularly critical of denominations that refused to ordain women. Lois began publishing a newsletter called Shekinah, a Hebrew term for the manifestation or presence of God. The printed title emphasized She. Contents were mostly reprinted newspaper and magazine articles about women taking leading roles in religious practices, or else editorials criticizing various faiths for limiting leadership opportunities for females. Many reprinted articles involved interviews with Lois herself-she eagerly sought opportunities to speak with the media about her discovery of the Holy Spirit's distaff aspect. Lois also traveled extensively, addressing both religious conferences and secular gatherings. She frequently identified herself as "Bishop Lois Roden," giving the impression she was part of some substantial church hierarchy rather than leader of the relatively small New Mount Carmel community.
