have you played any of the mystery dungeon games? they feel like a middle ground of the two styles, to me. i've only finished one of the pokemon ones but the bit of time i spent with one of the shirens makes me think this, too

i want to give players that fliping-through-a-book feeling. i kinda wanna give players the ability to turn every dial but i'm not sure if that's fun or interesting. maybe there's a middle ground where players feel empowered to redo sections but aren't too in-the-weeds? it's a really hard balance

i'm not quite at the point in my current project where i'm worrying too much about this, but i'm working on a narrative thing where little choices "matter" (not in a million endings way but such that they have small "consequences" (consequences is very loose here lol))
