Some tips for speaking to council:
- start off by clearly stating your support for the motion
- remember politicians are elected by you and they work for you!
- numbers and stats are useful, but sharing your personal experience can be very impactful

Last day for the TransLink survey! 🚍 "The demand for better transit is already here," says a 20-year Heights resident. Option 1 = better access to housing & businesses. Option 2 = thousands left behind. Link in bio to have your say! #BurnabyHeights #TransitJustice
“Why I, a 20-Year Resident of the Heights, Support Bus Lanes on Hastings” “The demand for better transit is already here. The R5 runs at or near capacity nearly every day. To their credit, TransLink recognizes this and is working on solutions.” — Nathaniel Christopher

📊 Transit = Affordability Our Executive Director sat down with CKNW to discuss how improved public transit can help address the affordability crisis. A study by Metro Vancouver reveals that households with reliable transit access find significant savings in Transportation. movementyvr.ca/cars-...

Without the alternative options like good transit, many people are stuck with the expensive burden of car ownership. By improving transit, families can more easily forgo a vehicle and save an average save of over $10,000 a year!

It's no surprise that housing in Metro Vancouver is expensive. But it might surprise you that for some parts of our region, transportation costs even more than housing.

Graph of Average Annual Cost of Housing and Transportation in Metro Vancouver by Municipality

Metro Vancouver can't solve cost-of-living crisis without addressing the cost of getting around

While the multi-billion-dollar SkyTrain projects draw the most public attention — and money — there’s another, often overlooked mode of transportation that Metro’s leaders view as a big part of the near-term solution: the humble bus.

Cars expensive! Transit cheap!

A new study finds that high transportation costs are driven largely by owning vehicles and people who live by rapid transit have a lower cost of living.

We're absolutely shocked!

(Just kidding, we aren't surprised at all.)

Your opinion will help decide! Fill out TransLink’s survey before September 21

We hope you support
Option 1: Hastings / Willingdon

As advocates for better public transit, we wanted to share our thoughts.

TransLink is asking you which route the BRT should take

OPTION 1: Hastings St and Willingdon Ave

OPTION 2: Boundary Rd and Lougheed Hwy

An arrow points to option 1 and says We think Option 1: Hastings / Willingdon is the better choice Why we support
OPTION 1

Option 1 serves more people with fast, frequent, and reliable transit

60,000 daily riders will bring new potential customers direct to Burnaby Heights businesses

It addresses the worst bus delay in Burnaby! Also, R5 buses to SFU can use the BRT lanes

Eileen Daily Pool, Confederation Park, and McGill Library would be totally skipped by Option 2 Why transit riders support
OPTION 1

Speech bubbles surround the following quotes:

I just moved from Burnaby Heights, and a lack of good transit going north/south was always my main complaint.
                                   – Harris

I love Burnaby Heights, but I don’t have a car so getting there from Metrotown means taking the 130 which takes nearly an hour for me.
- Samantha

Frequent and reliable transit is NECESSARY for someone who lives near Hastings street and needs to get to work on time. I frequently have to wait for a late bus only to get on an extremely crowded bus.
                   – Catherine Why we don’t support
OPTION 2

Option 2 serves fewer people with fast, frequent, and reliable transit

It doesn’t expand the rapid transit network because no stops are planned along Boundary

Gilmore to Brentwood is already served by the SkyTrain. We don’t need to duplicate that service

Routes BRT through low-density neighbourhoods, business parks, and BC Hydro infrastructure
movementyvr.bsky.social
Would you rather have new convenient transit access to the wonderful restaurants and shops in Burnaby Heights, or to a station that's already served by SkyTrain?

The choice is yours!

Metrotown–North Shore Bus Rapid Transit
EXPLAINED

A graphic of the MNS BRT route with a question mark around the undecided portion of the route
Park royal - Lonsdale - Phibbs Exchange - Kootenay Loop - Maybe Burnaby Heights - Brentwood - BCIT - Metrotown

Below: Car dealerships and wide streets and powerlines on Boundary Road, Image from Google

In the middle: Which street do you think has more transit riders? And what even is Bus Rapid Transit? An image of BRT in Utrecht, from Karl Fjellstrom, Far East Mobility

What is Bus Rapid Transit?

BRT is like SkyTrain for the road!
It’s fast, frequent and reliable
- buses every five minutes
- dedicated lanes to zoom past traffic
- fancy stations

Seattle put in BRT and ridership doubled in less than a year What is the Metrotown-North Shore BRT?

This new BRT route will go from Metrotown to Park Royal in only 60 minutes

The exact route is still undecided

Massive transit cuts are in effect in Philadelphia. They are facing a devastating 45% service cut, and a 20% fare increase. This is the 6th largest city in the US, and is one of the hosts for the world cup next summer.
SEPTA cuts: Riders feel a 'sense of loss' during the first day of reduced service
As SEPTA cuts begin, Philadelphians are adjusting to slower commute times. “It is grief, in a sense,” one rider said.

We agree with Natalie! The BRT will bring 60,000 potential customers, let’s make sure they go along Hastings through Burnaby Heights instead of car dealerships.

After all, transit users need food, not cars! 😋

A quote on a translucent blue circle:

"I used to take this route a lot as part of my former commute from Burnaby (Metrotown area) to CapU. It took way too long!

But while I was staring out the window on the bus, I discovered several favourite local businesses along Hastings, and would occasionally stop for a sandwich, snacks or dinner on my way to and from campus. I would not have discovered or patronized these businesses if the bus was routed through an industrial area."

– Natalie Desolate and barren Boundary road has glimspes of industrial buildings in the background.

"... or here?

Option 2: Boundary and Lougheed" Golden hour in Burnaby Heights, people get off the bus and walk along the sidewalk next to local businesses.

"Would you rather have transit here...

Option 1: Hastings and Willingdon"
