Bill L. Norton's Gargoyles: a curious '70s horror TV movie about demonic creatures in New Mexico. There's a young Scott Glenn & early monster effects from Stan Winston. It's hokey, but not without charm. Undoubtedly nightmare fuel for a generation of kids. Ripe for a remake.

John Carpenter's Prince of Darkness: an ensemble piece that's an excellent exercise in atmosphere & tension. It features a wonderful score from Carpenter & Alan Howarth as well as a cameo from Alice Cooper, credited as ‘Street Schizo’. Don't let him park your bicycle! Good stuff.

Mark Pellington’s Arlington Road: a paranoia thriller vibing on '70s pics like The Parallax View. Jeff Bridges' college professor suspects Tim Robbins is a terrorist. A chilling & prophetic vision of post-9/11 U.S. This has a great score, strong visuals & well-tuned performances.

Robert Zemeckis' Used Cars: a zany & energetic comedy.
Kurt Russell is as watchable as always, while Gerrit Graham has an absolute blast. It loses focus towards the end, but when the jokes land, they’re laugh out loud funny.

Enjoyed a brilliant evening last night in conversation with Adam Frost for @rossiterbooks.bsky.social at the Savoy in Monmouth - really enjoyed our conversation about plants & gardening and we had a packed audience who were very appreciative ☺️

Want a great double-bill to honour the late, great Gene Hackman? Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation & Tony Scott's Enemy Of The State. Two very different films (one is low-key, the other bombastic) about surveillance with some thematic parallels. Hackman is superb in both.

If we look at how Disney ran Star Wars into the ground, then this deal giving creative control of the James Bond franchise to Amazon is bad, bad news.
