"I Noticed That You Mentioned Silent Films So I Wanted to Come Over and Explain a Film I am Sure You Have Never Seen Called METROPOLIS" by Berthold Woltze

This is a typical junk brand set, you’ve probably seen it on social media.

It is designed to be filmed, not for function. Who wants to close their tool-carrying lid onto wet paint? Too many colors, likely dye-based or chalky, confusing to navigate.

No mixing space, that’s filled with cheap doodads

(My understanding is that Prang is expensive in Europe but Van Gogh is cheaper, so Europeans should go Van Gogh down the line, it is a very solid pick)

My $16 total beginner Try It picks from Blick. Good quality, available refills, no money for Lex Luther

These junk brands also stink at selling refills, so if you run out of one or two colors, you’ll have to pony up for the whole set. But I guess since the sets are designed to look pretty on social media rather than be functional, it is a reasonable bet that nobody will use them enough to run out

Remember, influencers who push these junk brands got the materials for free and may have received cash as well. If they didn’t bother to spend their money, why should you spend yours?

Friendly reminder that the Prime Day art supply “deals” are basically a few real brands to reel you in (and probably just matching the prices at Jerry’s or Blick) and the rest is just Temu-esque no name junk that would be cheaper still at the dollar store.

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

Undies made to fit circa 1927!

Quite a few people have knitted or crocheted beautiful wedding dresses but they did it more as a labor of love than a savings of money... and most of the ones who shared the journey tell tales of sore wrists and near madness. I would never!

The thick collar gives her a hunchback and the time commitment makes it anything but affordable. Sewn, yes. Crocheted, hell no.

I think this is the pattern but I subbed in some floral squares from somewhere else. I told you I was a maniac.

You may be looking at this 1980s crocheted wedding dress monstrosity's unfortunate design but I am looking at the war crime of BLACK STOCKINGS

I really don't remember the source but it was probably from a larger brand of 20 years ago. I may also have mashed two pattern books together, I was a maniac

I am a better knitter than crocheter but I do prefer crochet for blankets and toys. Hats go 50/50, I would say. Otherwise, knitting

All beds full of dogs and cats so I can’t lay it out but here are some of the 20 squares in my very first crochet project. Do not remember the pattern source, alas, but had a blast all those years ago

Then, immediately jump into something small with cables and something small with colorwork, just to get over any fear there. Cushions are ideal.

Don't knit dishcloths. Why do they always want you to knit dishcloths. I spent 3455 hours on this thing as a beginner and it's for DIRTY DISHES?

If you're learning to knit, a scarf. I know, I know but it really does build your confidence and if you use a kinda bulky and every so slightly fuzzy (but not too fuzzy) yarn, it will go fast. Don't do garter, that's boring, do a k2 p2 checkerboard stitch. Mine was in Icelandic Lopi.

If you just want to make stuffies and amigurumi, there are plenty of resources, carry on!

(pops head up)

If you are learning how to crochet and you don't just want to make stuffies, I highly recommend making a sampler blanket your first project. It introduces you to a ton of techniques before you know enough to be afraid of them. Worked great for me!
