Oh spiffy! Just saw @michael-berube.bsky.social ’s feed. every time I hear a Stones song I think about his lovingly brutal blog post about listening to Charlie Watts drumming.

I have been online for way too long, I think. because account suspension thrashes and meeting facilitation and the Nazi Bar anecdote are all the same elephant. you either moderate behavior or your community context falls apart.

After a blue wipeout last night, I am really enjoying that Spotify is serving up a heaping helping of heavy metal.

Though it has a passel of Deep Purple and I’m never sure they should count as metal

For those of us who had The Caine Mutiny as required reading in high school English, we are in a situation with lots of Keefers and no Maryks, except that our Queeg is an orange man, not a man obsessed with strawberries.

It really is important to understand how much of our society depends on people having the guts to do, not even what is right, but what it manifestly obvious. The 25th Amendment won’t be the magic Trump eraser, because Vance doesn’t have the honor or the spine.

There is a lot of great New York pizza but the vast majority of slice places are made for eating at 4am after leaving the bar. It’s enjoyable enough but it’s like advocating that Gray’s Papaya is better than a Milwaukee bratwurst.
New Haven pizza isn't good and you non-new yorkers need to stop trying to make your pizza a thing.

When the world is full of sour and stink, bake a Stout Chocolate cake. Guinness and chocolate and cake are good fee what ails us - or at least me and mine
Also, the new challenge of never having frosted the side of a cake before was a low stakes mission possible

STL (west) County: lots of debris and downed trees, stop lights out, heavy haze in the air with a dusty odor. Many blocked roads for Ameren work. Bread Co’s are packed from Town and Country to Chesterfield, and a woman in front of me even ordered her bagels sliced “bread style”. Madness

I was enjoying Paradise until Billy’s Ned Stark moment in Ep 4. Billy was established as someone who would absolutely not let an enemy strike first, without the Ned Stark excuse of “honor”. So the only reason “Sinatra” is alive was idiot plot armor beating Billy’s character into line.

This morning so far: a store run for bagels, donuts and popsicles; videos of groundhog noises (aka woodchucks and whistlepigs); an interview with Joe Meek from 1967; two cups of “Mardi Gras” flavored coffee; research into DIY deodorant; Alan Moore interview.

Incredibly informative thread here.
As someone who has reported on AI for 7 years and covered China tech as well, I think the biggest lesson to be drawn from DeepSeek is the huge cracks it illustrates with the current dominant paradigm of AI development. A long thread. 1/

“A boy sees his rich parents killed in a dark alley. His foster parent spends a large amount of money on therapy, and the boy grows up to found a charity that reduces crime through charitable works. Though he still has nightmares about the shooting, he does not regularly think of bats.”

“An elite investigative unit is assigned a murder case. They investigate for weeks, but get nowhere. After a 6 week wait for DNA results produces no leads, they put the case on the low priority list and move on. Four years later, the case is untouched and unsolved.”
