We know since Darwin´s book on the topic of sexual selection that the issue is more complex with respect to the sexual phenotype of individuals. The scientific background is provided in the introduction to the study and explained in its full context in the reference cited above.

The study shows that male and female phenotypic variances are overlapping when one measures them and that different body parts can have different overlaps. Accordingly, a categorization based on gamete types does not reflect the reality of individuals.

Does population size shape protein coevolution?
I explored this in my talk today at the MPI for Evolutionary Biology.
Our work in mammals suggests the answer is yes - genetic drift is a major determinant of compensatory mutations.

We build on Darwin’s work on sexual selection here.
Isn´t it self-evident that not all males and all females look the same? One cannot simply discuss this away by a definition. Individuals are more than their sex organs. For a further explanation, please look here: www.biuz.de/index.php/bi...

A new study reveals: Organs aren’t just “male” or “female” – they show overlapping patterns of sex-specific traits. Sex is a spectrum, not a box. 👉 www.evolbio.mpg.de/3837588/news...

Our current follow-up #modelling study with @gokhalecs.bsky.social, former colleague @mpi-evolbio.bsky.social, suggests that larval competition for space can actually drive the evolution of divergent reproductive timing, aka #allochrony, which results in spatial separation and reduced competition.

Could humans and AI one day form a single “evolutionary individual”? Researchers at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology raise this question in a new publication exploring human–AI interdependence.

In a just published OpEd, with @mkhochb.bsky.social‬, we draw upon Major Evolutionary Transitions thinking to outline future scenarios in which humans and AI might come to form new kinds of evolutionary units: humans as subsystems within an AI-coordinated whole.

As interdependencies between humans and AI grow, the two could come to function not merely as interacting agents, but as an integrated evolutionary individual subject to selection at the collective level. Image credit: Dave Cutler (artist).
