Mondex was 'electronic or digital cash' in the late 90s - p2p payments of real money (not tokens), and not requiring 3rd party settlement by a bank or scheme (Mastercard/Visa). And the money was held on an app on a card. Poor user/ merchant education and the first mobile payments helped its demise

Yesterday (Saturday off peak surely) I paid £22 for a 45 minute single journey into Liverpool Street. Quite shocked tbh.
