At that point, deliberation is not just pointless but pernicious. The real Cassandras were those who recognized early that the question ceased to be the pluralist/deliberative one—"how can we negotiate our differences?"—& became "how can we defeat this force & enduringly neutralize their influence?"

What's more, Sandel's desire for a more deliberative politics is *precisely* the kind of broadly liberal politics that has left American elites so unprepared for this moment. It's premised on the DANGEROUSLY erroneous belief that you can do pluralist politics with those who reject pluralism.
