A big part of why we are at where we are is that much of the world, the press, foreign leaders, a big hunk of US voters, simply refused to believe it when Democrats said Trump would be as bad as he is.

Everyone gets caught up with rewarding and punishing or rallying people to support or (more frequently) oppose politicians at the expense of making the case for and rallying support for the position itself.

That doesn’t mean it’s bad. It seems to work great for you and that’s great.
I’m interested in what the next generation of these tools looks like and I’m sure interesting things will happen when experience from people like you who have beaten paths for yourselves filter back into the tool design.

Absolutely I think the way you two have described working sounds like some of the best and most effective ways to use these tools. And I have no doubt you are right when you say how useful they’ve been. But I don’t think that means you’re unaffected by all upstream decisions in hard to see ways.

And I think the way those meta questions of how you interact with / use these things winds up embedding assumptions about what work and thought and creativity even are or look like to engage in. And I’m not ready to cede that table setting power to define the shape of the arena to these companies.

Wind up pervading the whole thing in insidious ways that become invisible the more you swim in it. I’m not just talking about them gassing you up all the time. I don’t know the right answers or anything, but the chatbot paradigm itself makes me a bit uncomfortable.

This is all a bit half baked from me, but many of my problems with LLMs stem from those sorts of decisions as much or more than anything inherent to LLMs. But that doesn’t make them trivial!

This is all a bit half baked from me, but many of my problems with LLMs stem from those sorts of decisions as much or more than anything inherent to LLMs. But that doesn’t make them trivial!

I do think a lot of people have been frog boiled by choices these companies have made about what interacting with an LLM looks like and how much that framing can affect things.

I am very big on the importance of meta cognitive skills, so it’s not like I think it’s wrong per se, but so much of threads like the one linked read like “I’m too smart to be affected by cognitive bias / propaganda” to me.

But, also, generally you should want to make things nice for your partner?
Lovingly lining up the toilet paper in the arbitrary way they prefer should be a regular reminder that you share your life with a separate person instead of being alone with with no one to care about making things nice for.

That said, if I don’t like, say, my wife’s laundry workflow and worry that someday it will cause a problem, my choices are to either get over it or trade tasks so I can be particular about it in the way I prefer.
Don’t micromanage your spouse, but don’t try some malicious compliance routine either.

I think this is much more true re strong opinions about the WAY a task is done rather than that a task is done. “We live together and part of respecting me is respecting my strong preferences about my environment, whether you share them or not” is always valid.

That doesn’t mean the ads themselves are devoid of creative thought, just that they are what the ai is making a soulless mimicry of.

I can see why you’d find it insulting, but I don’t think it‘s symmetrical. Any single ad is not slop, but put them all together and ask what the common vibe is and that is what these ai slop videos are targeting. It’s like camouflage. They’re trying to disappear against a field of ads.

None of them would refer to themselves as as eugenicists and if they did it would be a very bad sign.

I think that’s pretty common in people who do the actual research. Far less common among people who first get rich or famous or powerful and then get interested in promoting it.
One of the tragedies of all this is that these horrible people hijack all these fields and come to define them.

It would be nice if this could be channeled into needed reforms, but this group includes people who hate Dems because too much trans, too little trans, too much ((globalists)), not enough support for Israel, fight more, and out with the olds. Not my first choice for a coalition to trade to.

It’s people who are unhappy with how the Democratic Party presents and organizes. Some people see this and think “like DSA folks and Jacobin types” and others see “centrist scolds” but the unifying feature isn’t location on the political spectrum it’s non-Republicans on the ~left who hate Democrats.

I will never understand why people on the left half of the Democratic Party (a group that includes me) are so eager to help people on the right half win the argument that they are the real Democrats who embody the soul of the party.
