With a special reserve well of disgust for the wealthy, well educated "we thought he'd lower our taxes" crowd who absolutely knew what they were voting for.

I don't think so. I read the whole speech after posting my comment. I think he was saying that he welcomes the right abandoning decorum, because it shows their true colours.

Yes but that was the 90s. I don't think anyone's even feigning civility these days. So in that sense Mamdani is wrong. The ugliess and cruelty is very much front and centre, and it seems people vote for it in its undisguised form.

I don't get it though. When was the last time decorum or civility were in evidence? The 90s? To me it feels like the cruelty and ugliness is front and centre and undisguised.

I recall writing an essay for a uni course that included similar flourishes that my teenage self found amusing like and getting a comment back from the lecturer that was like "a decent essay, despite the cringe worthy asides"
