This is the thing. It’s a digital only subscription. The much mentioned carnet is figurative. But my goodness did they want to talk about it. 😆

It’s a lot to think about.

DO I myself start using the word repeatedly? should I refuse steadfastly to use it even if the conversation provides the opportunity to do so?

Should I myself introduce a word I think might be new to them to assert the intellectual high ground, and if so what should that word be?

And that’s the story. I have been thinking about it for weeks now and the more time goes on the more I think the answer is ‘A’ and in turn I find myself wondering what my approach should be the next time we happen to be in the sauna at the same time…

C. We’re themselves unsure as to the applicability of the term to this context and hoped through flooding the linguistic zone they might elicit from me some sort of support or dissent pertaining to its usage.

A. Thought I was an idiot to whom this phrase was novel, and they wanted to educate me, or perhaps just impress me.

B. Just really enjoyed saying it and were capitalising on an opportunity to do so with a captive and near naked audience.

The first few times I didn’t really register it because obviously it’s just a word people use to describe this kind of thing, but as time went on and they kept saying it it took on an absurdist tone and I was trying to work out if they…

In the course of the conversation which was taking place inside an 85 degree sweaty horsebox on the seafront, they must have - and I’m not exaggerating here - uttered the word ‘carnet’ a dozen times...

I was in the sauna a couple of weeks ago with a very nice couple in their mid-fifties, and we got talking about the subscription offer the sauna was running to encourage repeat visits...

Stamp duty rates should not be binary for 1st/2nd property purchases and should instead increase with each additional purchase whereby your 8th property carries a 35% stamp duty. This would raise significant additional tax revenue and disincentive the building of large landlord portfolios.

I didn’t make it to the beach this morning but I did take this nice photograph yesterday at sunrise. #devon

Also striking in that clip is the idea that fascism and democracy aren’t entirely compatible ideas and that if enough people vote for something that makes it automatically non-fascist. God help us.

The Coventry City success story is here: get through the worst years of your existence, find a rich, benevolent, local owner, rebuild the club, back a manager and watch things soar.

This is a brilliant tale of what a club can be…

Keir Starmer raising the notion of “Britishness” as a proxy for decency to try and put people off protesting a genocide his government continues to supply weapons for is … insane.

If that’s what Britishness is, then yes, protesting against it is manifestly un-British, but then so is decency.

It was! We’ve had a good week of sunshine here. Long may it continue! You will just have to head south. Humans shouldn’t be all the way up there come winter.
