Alternative folk Singer songwriter with @fromtheworkshop.bsky.social . My diaries as a punk rocker turned folk musician.
Christmas is a time for believing that dreams can come true. My whole life i gave to something i now no longer hold to. All I have is music, Helen and my kids. Music is the constant, the friend, the crutch, the light in the darkness. Without it there is no point. So I dream big. And continue to...

I don't think I'm very good at this thing called life.

Feel like i've let the good momentum slip away from this year. Released our best song to date and its pretty much fallen flat and ive lost steam for constantly pursuing venues and folk clubs. It'll brighten up I'm sure. Just want you all to hear Helen's incredible voice.

Next single is coming soon. Had our friend having a "fiddle" with the song on Sunday night. It's sounding beautiful and its also the first of our songs recorded and mixed by yours truly. Very excited!

Spent an odd afternoon at the Green Note for their open mic. If you read anywhere about making contacts and friends, its just so pretentious and false.

In other news, we had a friend record a violin part for us in the home studio, for our upcoming single! Very excited to be getting on with mixing

Getting close to finishing a new (older song) single for From The Workshop. Been the first time releasing music that I've performed, recorded, mixed and (to be) mastered. One more recording session with a late entry musician on Sunday and hopefully a music video to record too in a few weeks time.

Again I come to a place of finding time to do anything to help promote the music and to apply for festivals and gig emails are falling on deaf ears. Don't often feel like giving up on music but the sense of rejection is massive. Maybe we are just not good enough.

The moments we as musicians hope for when making your name. Playing in a 300 capacity venue on a bill of 3 artists or bands. Happening now. 20 people have turned up. Very grateful for them but...well... bugger.

Been editing our new single last night. Still some work to do before mixing begins but won't get a chance until next week. Booking Hall in Dover this coming Saturday, with the excellent Nick Lawrence and Izzy Woodland, followed by a trip to Birchington for the Kent Country Show on Sunday & Monday.

Recording vocals with Helen for a much loved song of ours tomorrow, with an aim of releasing as a single in the next few months. It will be the first to be fully produced by yours truly. Hope this will fly!

I think I'm grieving songs at the moment. Ones that I've written as when FTW was solo and may never see the light of day until we've stopped writing, which doesn't seem to have an end in site thank god! Grieving "the plan" which is put aside because no-one wants to hear songs we dont perform.

There are now about 55 @fromtheworkshop.bsky.social completed songs that we sing live. We have recorded and released 14. It's nuts how far behind we are. Do we just record the very very best and to hell with any sense of order? What do #musiciansofbluesky think?

What's next? Dover and Birchington. A few more gigs booked for the rest of the year. Looking to record some singles (not really what I wanted to do but my arm had been twisted) which might mean delayed albums. With 3 albums to record, that makes me twitchy 😵‍💫. Talking about music video today too.

It's been good to get away. 4 new songs almost in the bag and one of them we played last night. It's been good to write again. Its been a bit hard on my heart due to some conversations about the recordings but got to go back and record more. And lots! We are so behind!

Last night's gig in Herne Bay, Kent. We had one person come to see us. A lovely singer songwriter and radio presenter. But we also had people from the campsite also come and see the "entertainment". I'm not sure what they expected but left feeling like we "made their summer". And it made ours.

Met with a couple of (honest) friends last night who we met playing in Canterbury. "It's good but the production..." my thoughts all along. I wasnt happy with the final outcome of T:owards but was 6 months delayed and by the end I was exasperated. Let's hope next one is better 😁

That was a lovely folk week day in Broadstairs. A lot of our music friends from back home came out to see us play and quite a few people we didnt know stepped in to listen. It was a well performed set, but still waiting for that "right place right time right person" moment. We know we can make it.

Waking up with a typical glum outlook on musical things this morning. #Broadstairsfolkweek for us today and just know we're going to be another spec of dust being carried through on the wind. Relatively new to the festival folk scene (only this year) it's hard break through into people's brains.

We've got away to the caravan in what was meant to be a holiday has turned into a bit of a songwriting retreat...2 new songs almost in the bag but decided to stop after neighbours thought we had a song on CD playing on repeat all day...
I'm happy though. Songwriting had not been so present recently.

Congrats @officialcpfc.bsky.social FA Cup, and now the Community Shield. Bringing it on home lads! Well done.

The morning after album launch. Shattered. Huge headache. Lovely turn out for the gig. Off for a working break now in Canterbury. Two gigs: Broadstairs Folk Week and Old Garage Bar in Herne Bay. Hopefully some songwriting to happen too.

Do other #musicians wake up on album launch to their 11 year old about to take a cupboard door and make "a dangerous slide" down the stairs before barricading themselves in their room? Helen's life...

Album launch show day today. Haven't caught the excitement yet. Trying to rouse myself with some Nancy Kerr. Had some lovely comments from people who have already listened. Makes me more excited to the next two albums that I've started recording.

One more day until the release of T:owards - @fromtheworkshop.bsky.social 2nd album. And I am in the bedroom recording songs for album no.4 even though no.3 is nowhere near finished. So behind! Got a 5th to record as well...

This has been a trial so to speak. The nuance of a solo project turning into a duo, whilst writing songs as partners and also focusing on the recordings that document my solo time. But its almost here. T:owards, the 2nd installment of solo writings is released after midnight tonight.
