A week to go until my next TeachMeet!

Join me at 4 pm on Wednesday 15th October to examine some different models we use in teaching mathematics, what it means for them to be forward-facing, and which models that we use can be considered forward-facing.

After a long time away I am back to producing manipulatives videos for my YouTube channel!

My new video is about using manipulatives and representations to solve simple linear equations. Check it out here:

Its official! I have been awarded my Master of Arts in Educational Leadership, with a Merit.

Big thanks to National Institute of Teaching and Education (NITE) for their teaching, support and guidance through this wonderful course.

The two I previously mentioned would cover most bases across number and algebra. The 1s tiles in the algebra tiles can do everything two-sided counters can, and, with a little prep, multilink can be used in place of Cuisenaire, multicoloured counters and Dienes. I have even used them for place value
mrmattock.bsky.social
That would depend entirely on what concepts I was going to use them to teach, and what models I was going to use for those concepts. However, I cant imagine teaching algebra without algebra tiles anymore, and multilink is a good all-rounder.

We all know that practice matters in maths. But what kind of helps pupils truly understand what they’re doing, rather than answering questions by rote?

Really excited to be supporting @stoccat.bsky.social this year in developing mathematics teaching across their secondary schools and building on the great work they started last year with Craig Barton.

Although I have a soft spot for constructions which, if taught well, can be linked to shape properties, graphs, and inequalities, I do recognise that their teaching provides logistical headaches for both teacher ls and exams officers, so I wouldn't fight hard if they were removed.

Back in May www.linkedin.com/in/barry-kea... sent me two A-Level goal free problems.
It has been a long time coming, but I finally managed to find time to get them hosted on my website goalfreeproblems.blogspot.com

My latest article for HMRK magazine is out!
What could a new national curriculum for maths look like?
Read my thoughts here: hwrkmagazine.co.uk/read/
There is a document referenced towards the end of the article that couldn't be linked. The link to that document is here: 1drv.ms/w/c/ac85973c...

Out with ‘outstanding’, in with ‘exceptional’. Ofsted ditches single-word ratings for a new 1–5 scale this November.
Clarity or just more pressure?

Is anyone else tired of the GCSE maths bashing that has been doing the rounds lately? It is far from perfect, admittedly, but I don't think it deserves the heat it has been getting lately.

My thoughts about it can be read here:
