it's weird cuz back when i first played spelunky i thought the big appeal of roguelikes were the dynamic improvisational gameplay cauded by the random level layouts, but now it has shifted more towards the crazy item synergies and what not

it's fucked up cause the removal of timers in genres that really benefit from them just ends up with a lot of spammy/exploitative strats being used
camping in one place and slowly chipping away at a boss' HP just wouldn't work if there was a harsh time limit

i remember reading someone's game review that compared ranking systems at the end of each level to "a stupid letter grade given to you by a college teacher who only works part time"

played that demo and it did look gorgeous, but the gameplay did feel pretty boring unfortunately
neat combo potential but the enemies were pure sandbags most of the time
haven't played any other shinobi games so i can't compare but on its own it just felt like a very basic modern 2d hack n slash
