I honestly think you would really like Lanark. It's a bleak book but there's a lot of empathy in his writing while avoiding mawkishness. The protagonist isn't likeable always, but he's understandable

I'd need to read them both again to double check this I think, but for mood Titus Alone really vibed with Lanark for me. Not similar but both hit the same spot
