I have 1/2 dozen students in both classes that haven't been to class since early Sept. They don't answer emails. I do progress reports so that counselors can call them. I'm told that students plan to do assignments and take tests, but they don't.[I'm teaching the non-stem math.]

Saw someone point out that most of these professions touch children's lives.

Also, noticed that most of these professions used to be classified "pink collar."

One of the fun lessons in elem math then were "bases". I learned another base each year 5th - 8th. Then "bases" disappeared from math.

When I taught Upward Bound math, boss said to teach anything I wanted. Well, I taught a different "base" every summer. Kids loved it.

I don't think either is as evil as parents and social media make them sound.

Besides there were a subset of students from then that became good math teachers for a while. [retired now]

For a while taking math was natural.

Every time I've heard or read parents' complaints about Common Core math, I've been reminded of NEW math. I'm hoping Common Core math had more teachers' prep and PD. Many of the odd things about it posted on Facebook, I recognize as teacher not getting the real message.

I was born in 50s and went to elem in 60s. I remember learning NEW math with popsicle sticks. My dad taught 5th grade. All the other teachers would meet in his room before school to learn how to teach that day's math. There was no prep for teachers or PD when NEW math came.

Changed with each hs admin:

Open to prevent sex stuff

Closed because no AC in hall

Open to assist "snap shot" evaluations

Closed for safety reasons

etc

Now at community college, I leave it open for late arrivals, air circulation, etc.

Since spell check frequently underlines math terms that I know are spelled correctly, I figure math gets to break the "rules."

I've ALWAYS said "take away" for subtraction problems. I don't think you are wrong!

Later with calculators need different terms for negative and subtract.

That is also the button that separates out the email that I don't want to read or populate my inbox. Is there any other way?

You're question, "How do illegal immigrants afford housing?"

At my last job, multigen families of Hispanics lived together and there were several incomes pooled.

Our farmer's market uses SNAP, too. Their SNAP dollars are doubled if used for fresh fruit and veggies. It's a good part of what the farmers sell.

Taylor Swift makes major donations to food banks in every location that she sings. She has also helped many with medical/hospital expenses.
