I spent a fair amount of time yesterday dislodging the eraser from the classroom pencil sharpener. I thought (wrongfully) that switching to an older grade (from 1st to 3rd) meant I was done with things like that.

One of the BEST feelings as a teacher is to step onto a bus full of former students and have them yell your name...and ask if you'll be their teacher again.

When I let students choose the number of the day, I wasn't surprised that 67 was chosen. I was, however, surprised today when a student used 666.

There's not much better for a teacher than having previous years' students run up and hug you, say they miss you, and ask if they can go back to your grade. When this happens, I tell my current students that I'm famous.

We were talking about families. I mentioned that my niece is 34. One student asked how my niece can be older than me. She's my new favorite student.

It's fantastic (sarcastic voice) that the city decided to repave the street in front of our school the week school returns, like they didn't have all summer. The smell of hot asphalt is overwhelming.

If the school supply list asks for a 12ct of colored pencils then send in a 12ct of colored pencils, not a 24ct and certainly not a 50ct.
A) Your child doesn't need to be special in that way.
B) The teacher asked for that specific thing for a reason.

Parents and teachers should be partners. SO, parents please do not send in supplies that are not on the list (and no smelly, glittery, cute things... keep those for home) and teachers stop putting hard to find items on the list (white folders).

As back to school begins there are some things that parents should to keep in mind. First reminder:
Do not give your child Tylenol and send them to school when they have a fever. The Tylenol will wear off and they will be miserable. Make arrangements now for sick days.

Why would you send your child to school in flip flops (which aren't permitted) on Field Day?
June 4, 2025 at 3:35 PM
Today's vocabulary sheet had the sentence: He moved here from a ___________ country called Sudan.
One of my students wrote "my home country" in the margin and drew an arrow to the word Sudan.

Would it be unprofessional to tell the parent who keeps hounding me about his kid's grades that if he really cared about his kid's grades then he shouldn't have pulled him out of school for 3 weeks and then another 2-1/2 weeks a month later to travel?

A colleague just told a student that they didn't need a jacket in class. They don't, but it seems a little hypocritical when she's wearing a winter hat.

Parents chaperoning the field trip got a small dose of what we see everyday. That's your kid, too.
