Also short stories now that I'm thinking. It gives that sense of being able to finish a story without it taking forever too.

Most definitely - I advise them all the time.
They are more accessible for all - what I love about @barringtonstoke.bsky.social is that they are still filled with interesting and challenging vocabulary. All children still need exposure to new vocabulary and they are so clever this way

This. 100% this.
I love that you know what works for you. Some children and adults don't realise that all texts are different so it's worth trying other options.

What books would you add to this list?

It’s #DyslexiaAwarenessWeek in Scotland this week and in the rest of the UK next week. As a dyslexic reader myself I wanted to use #KidsBooksFriday this week to celebrate brilliant, accessible and super-readable texts of all kinds.

Book cover for Reek by Alastair Chisholm, illustrated by George Caltsoudas showing a young person with a helmet and rocket books swinging through a futuristic Edinburgh via a rope. Book cover for Wonderfully Wired Brains by Louise Gooding showing a young person with short hair and glasses wearing a green hoodie. Around their head are a myriad of different things from animals to basketballs, pencils, paint brushes and games controllers. Book cover for Ink Girls by Marieke Nijkamp and Sylvia Bi showing three girls with papers in their hand as if passing our leaflets, hovering over a medieval European style city. Book cover for The Horse Dreamer by Holly Surplice showing a sketch style drawing of a girl riding a galloping horse.

Like most people I automatically switch to @barringtonstoke.bsky.social too. Fabulous books for all learners. Also important to champion that authentic voice which is why I've chosen Wider than the Sea by @serenamolloy.bsky.social

A fab topic! I'll share my options later #KidsBooksFriday

Oh I can't wait to read this. So much to read - need to start bookmarking time to read academic stuff!

It's a great article. Might give it to the TRG group to read this year.

I've definitely missed some gorgeous picture books since moving out of the classroom
It's the main thing I miss from teaching...
mrskirstbarrett.bsky.social
I saw that advertised but have never bought it. A great one for teachers.

I nearly when with The tree and the river! Great wordless text.
Oh and some new ones I don't know
mrskirstbarrett.bsky.social
I still have my account, but I don't use it. I keep it to see what is happening but like that. I can't engage anymore. We appreciate this!

You are building the community and I've missed it terribly 📚📚📚

Animals of farthing wood...for me was a TV show and a magazine. Totally brought nature to my eyes as a child (and Captain Planet)
And that Pixie story definitely rings a bell for me

I loved this theme as I was able to share a story and use it to take children outside. I'm sure I have more but time to slow it down and get some housework done!

Thanks for organising these chats, I'll pop on later and try not to buy too many new books. Waiting until my extension is finished 🫣

Oh totally! I was like that with The Final Year. There was too much hype...but it was all true.
I needed this today. Lovely to get back to sharing books.
mrskirstbarrett.bsky.social
My 3rd post and I haven't even looked at the little one's bookcase yet. How could I have forgotten The Promise!

I might stop sharing now.... #KidsBooksFriday

This was our favoured read when my little one was younger.
@melissacreate23.bsky.social suggested it and it is a book we will keep forever

I couldn't resist another post #kidsbooksfriday
Some more nature loving books 🥰

I think you'll love them. You get so swept away into the story. She is a fabulous world builder. There is enough familiar touches that it all feels so real.
If that makes sense?

It's so beautiful - I don't think I actually have a copy of Mirror...I might need to remedy that
